The Bruno Debate Continues

The debate over Sacha Baron Cohen's Bruno continues as the movie comes out at #1 in the box office with $30.4 Million over the weekend. CNN claims the gay community is torn over the movie, but if the theater I went to is any indication, the gays are loving it!

I saw the movie this weekend and the showing was at least 70% gay. That was followed by straight frat brothers which made for some awkward moments. But then again, the movie was full of cringe worthy moments. I thought it was hillarious and the intentions of Cohen were obvious but at times the amount of homophobia out there was a little scary to see. Especially in a cage fight scene in rural Arkansas.

That said, if there's one person who can make that sort of thing funny and turn it on it's head, it's Cohen. If you enjoyed Bruno and don't mind an awkward moment here and there, you'll enjoy this movie.

Anyone else see the movie? What did you think?

  1. Oh my gods it was fucking funny!!!!
i think alot of people should see it, if anything just for the shock and funny things…

  2. i think he is a total asshole and if there was a way for me to boycot it, i would! when he was on the today show in NY he made one of the hosts cringe. he shouldnt be allowed on screen. and i will NEVER go see the movie!

  3. I saw it and was disappointed. It was just stupid. Borat was much better.
The good news/bad news is Bruno really had to go to extremes to get a reaction out of people. That shows that people are much more tolerant then we give them credit for. Sacha probably thought he could a strong reaction out of people just by his clothes and queeny behavior, but it didn’t work. He had to push and push the limits to get what he wanted. He should have gone to a gay bar for a segment, but that might have shown he pisses gay people off too.
I was especially glad to see the audience of mostly 20-30 year old males laughed appropriately; at the same things the gays laughed at. No was was laughing at the cage match – the theater was very quiet. So, I was happy to see how far the younger generation has come. Gay won’t be an issue in the next 20 years.

  4. the is actually an epic movie. it only helps the community. one should be a total dumbass to the think it was a true reflection.
brokeback mountain was a nice breakthrough of a gay cinema into the public, but many people i know were disinclined to watch a love story of 2 guys. however, those same people don’t mind going to see a gay guy who makes fun of himself.
the movie really shows homophobia that exists because it is sort of a documentary. the cage scene is the culmination of it all. at first it was really funny, but then as it got worse, the audience stopped laughing and went silent – it was ‘the moment of truth’, all the ugliness showed, it was pretty tragic. i think that scene teaches a good lesson say to those that were rather skeptical of homosexuality. obviously u can’t change the minds of those haters, but movie like this can influence the minds of those ‘undecided’ which can really help in voting, polls, etc. it’s an anti-homophobia movie from top to bottom.
    i don’t understand glaad’s criticism..

  5. I think it’s ridiculous if people get offended by this movie. It was very outrageous, but it was very funny. I think the gays that get offended by this are too uptight.
