The Best Gay Break-Up Song You’ve Never Heard

You can’t blame me for that title. Off the top of my head, I can’t think of any recent gay break-up songs that truly hit the nail on the head. Garçon Garçon captured the whole “crying on the dance floor” vibe with “Stay In Touch“. The Pet Shop Boys delivered the smooth groove “Leaving” back in 2011, Brendan Maclean channeled his pain into the quirky pop ditty “Stupid“, and well, I’m sure one of the indie singer-songwriter types like Woodpigeon, Chris Garneau, Aiden James, Jay Brannan or Christopher Dallman tackled the subject of broken hearts at one point or another…

But where’s the overwrought, melodramatic torch ballad? Where’s the gay male equivalent of Adele? Where’s the song that’s so damn emotional that people who are perfectly happy hear it, stop dead in their tracks and feel their eyes start to water up? And, fuck, do we even want that song to exist?

Well, we don’t have a choice either way! British singer Rudi Douglas has taken a break from his gig in Whinnie Williams‘ band to deliver his gut-wrenching solo single “He Won’t Swim In My Ocean”. It’s got the theatrical, cathartic quality that the best break-up songs have been known to have, and if that weren’t enough, the video is rather stunning in the visual department (and I’m not just talking about those brief shots of Rudi in his underwear). Check this one out! I promise you that, musically speaking, it’s better than Big Dipper‘s “Skank“.

  1. Thanks, Dewitt. Can’t believe that video has been around since Oct and doesn’t even have 8k views. That song is beautiful.
