Sex Continues to Sell in a Slow Economy

Holding Hands

Almost every corner of the economy is taking a hit, but one industry is thriving: sex!

People aren't buying new cars or eating out as often as they did before. They're passing up the Grey Poupon for the generic mustard, but they're not skimping when it comes to their sex lives.

Some corporations, like Philips Electronics and Hitachi, which have never forayed into sexual entertainment are now manufacturing vibrators.

Some would say that this is a cultural phenomenon. "The emphasis has gone from family planning to sexual well-being," says Louis Friedman, chief executive of Liberator, a maker of sex toys in the US.

If you've been pinched by the economy, are you spending more/less/the same on sex?

  1. We are actually trying to find out if this is the case here in San Francisco through an investigation.
We are sharing the cost of hiring a reporter who will investigate for us if the sex economy here is doing better or worse because of the recession: http://spot.us/pitches/45
Could go either way in my mind.
