Senate Passes Hate Crimes Bill

Hate-crimes-stop-hating

In a vote of 63 to 28, the US Senate has approved a bill that would extend federal hate crimes laws to protect those who are attacked because of their gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability. The current law is limited to discrimination based on race, ethnicity or religion.

The House has already passed the bill, so it'll be moving to President Barack Obama's desk shortly. Some claim that there's a possibility that he'll veto it due to its attachment to a bill he promised to veto, but I'm remaining optimistic. Don't let us down, Big O!

  1. You’re asking the “Big O” not disappoint you but you continue to ignore his dishonorable discharge of gay members of the military. Since he took office, as Commander-In-Chief Obama has thrown 266 gays out of the military. With one signiture he could change this but he refuses to. And, members of the gay media like you continue to provide covor for Obama and make up lame excuse for his betrayal. Shame.

  2. This is a blog. Anyone who feels the need to point out grammatical errors is a major fucking douche bag.
In news relevant to the post, I think it’s important that we not forget this is attached to a defense spending bill. I personally would not blame the President if he vetoed this. This hate crime legislation should stand on its own (as should all bills).

  3. Obama has reneged on his biggest promise to gay community and you’re response is to keep cheerleading for him like mindless sheep. SHAME

  4. remind me again why one human being’s being beaten or insulted or killed is so much worse than another human being’s being beaten or insulted or killed? i agree that people should not be beaten simply because of race or gender or appearance or behavior; but that does not mean that the penalty should be any greater. we are still a nation of law (or are we?)

  5. well said, Martin. a human life is a human life, and protection under the law applies to all.
