Sacha Baron Cohen’s Next Gimmick Is Old News

With all the Bruno controversy fading slowly into our past, comedian Sacha Baron Cohen is currently developing his next character for a currently untitled project. According to sources, he's dreamed up a new character with writing partner Dan Mazer, in the form of "a wannabe pop star desperate to win the annual [Eurovision Song Contest]". Hilarious! Too bad it's already been done.

Back in 2006, an Icelandic actress named Ágústa Eva Erlendsdóttir entered the Eurovision Song Contest with a fake song entitled "Congratulations". The tune was performed by her alter-ego Silvia Night, and few individuals realized it was all a joke. This led to some confusion when she pointed at a reporter and exclaimed, "Somebody has been spreading lies about me and I think it is YOU… and you are a slut and I hate you!"

But that's not it! She also appeared on MTV Japan, telling the VJs that she came to their country because she was shopping for a "cute Japanese kid". The interview also included such gems as, "Dont talk about Björk cause she's a retard. I feel really bad for her cause everyone is laughing at her. But I much famer than her."

I'm not sure whether it's a coincidence that Cohen and Mazer are in the process of developing the exact same character, but they should really give up and go back to the drawing board. While Bruno wasn't universally loved, Cohen and his crew at least produced something semi-original and thought provoking. In this case, he'd just be stealing another country's leftovers. Though some viewers may be able to deal with sloppy seconds, I totally can't go for that.
