Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” Undergoes Gender Reassignment.

Remember five minutes ago when we were talking about how Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” was a contender for Song of the Summer 2013? Well, since then, the song has been swimming around in the collective consciousness and the clever lasses that make up Mod Carousel have come up with their own cover of the song where they perform a gender switch on the original. Here it is:

Let’s skip all the academic dialogue about gender politics and the objectifying male gaze and get to the point; I’m putting this up because it features cute guys in dance belts strutting about while glamorous women belt out a playful, super cool song. It’s a winning combination that usually gets the attention of gay men – I mean, here WE are, after all.

There’s something “dead behind the eyes” or “uncharismatic” about the naked guys in the video – the made-up twink particularly – and I initially thought the long haired one was possibly a new incarnation of Chris Crocker but aside from that, as is the case with Mod Carousel, this song also serves as a reminder that Robin Thicke is quite talented.

So, here’s to Robin Thicke and to Mod Carousel and to the charming young, partially dull, somewhat naked men that have commandeered our attention for these brief moments. May at least one of you win an award for something before the Summer is out.

Charley Flynn.
