Recession Leads to Rise in Condom Sales

Condoms

In the economic environment we find ourselves, you'd expect slumping sales all across the retail world. But one product is thriving in these challenging times. Condom sales have jumped 6% in January, when many other industries (auto, retail) are struggling to stay afloat.

People are clearly finding cheaper forms of entertainment, and we know that a session in the sack doesn't cost much, and is very entertaining. The idea of "nesting" isn't escaping the marketing execs at the big condom companies either.

USA Today reports, "Carol Carrozza, vice president of marketing for
Ansell Healthcare, maker of LifeStyles condoms, says that her company
may incorporate the idea of nesting into future campaigns, along with a
focus on new products.

'We're mulling both … and trying to determine
what kind of products and marketing strategies we can come out with
that will help people during these recessionary times,' she says."

It makes sense to me, and reminds me of MANHUNT's debut on Chelsea Lately, where she discussed a similar effect. What do you guys think, are condoms recession proof?

  1. i’m sure the nesting is a factor, but isn’t it just as likely that straight couples want to avoid conceiving children (ya know, the other thing condoms prevent) because they are concerned about a-bringing a child into a world that is becoming increasingly unstable because of the financial situation, and b-having a child (1st, 2nd, or 19th) has some pretty heavy costs associated with it that the economy might not enable them to bear up under.
