Random Question: Real Name or Fake Name?

What’s your name? It’s a simple question that you (hopefully) know the answer to, but it can be difficult to answer in the world of online dating and hook-ups. For various reasons, you may not want to share this information with a complete stranger. Perhaps you have to operate under a certain level of discretion. Or maybe you haven’t established enough trust to share that information with your potential partner.

Whatever the case may be, are we wrong to assume that most of us have lied about our name at some point or another? Do you use a fake name when meeting up with other guys? If not, do you think it’s dishonest for other folks to do so? Leave a comment with your thoughts.

  1. To have a fake name for your profile is ok but not to tell someone your real name when you meet them is dishonest.

  2. I honestly do NOT understand the point in lying about your name if it is something even near common. I mean my name is Richard. How many dicks are out there on Manhunt? A butt load.

  3. If its just sex, use whatever name you want, it is fantasy afterall. if its a little more serious, you would probably use your real name.

  4. I think it’s weird you’d feel comfortable enough to fuck someone without feeling comfortable enough to trust them with at least a first name.

  5. I think that there’s times that it matters.
At first, I only give my real name to the ones that I meet. If I don’t  intend on meeting with them, I don’t give any name.
But now that I’ve started go-go dancing and stuff, it’s a little more interesting. The guy needs to be able to know my real name, not my Joel performer name.

  6. i think knowing your first name is perfectly acceptable.  knowing more than that?  trouble.  then they facebook friend you, then they see your life, friends, etc. Then they want to know what you are doing all the time and get offended when you dont go out of your way to sleep with them again….. last names are trouble.  and not the fun kind 🙂

  7. i’ve always wondered if i got guys real names i always give my real name only because i could never think of one off the top of my head haha

  8. I always use my real name online, whether it’s a personal site like Manhunt or a more pedestrian forum or discussion site.

Pretty committed to “truth in advertising”.

  9. as a person whos done this in da past n continues to do it in the present i dnt think theres anythin wrong with it. wen it comes to just hookups the person dnt have to kno your real name unless ur plannin on startin a relationship with them. i dnt et mad wen others do it either so no its not wrong

  10. I have a philosophy that I go by when regarding my name: If an enemy knows your name they have the ability to capture your soul. And should they find the date of your birth, they can find a way to own the paths to your past and future. Only my loved ones and closest friends know my true name. That is why when I meet someone, I always give them my alias, and explain to them the philosophy above. This is because naming something gives it power, and those who gave the name often control said thing.

  11. my screenname has a name that is not my name, so most people assume that is my real name…..  if I see it developing into something more than a quick chat or a fuck I give them my real name…

I do not think it is dishonest because no one should believe anything they encounter online…. unless I see a driver’s license, I assume most people lie about their age, height, weight, etc… of course this would normally qualify as dishonesty, but it is so prevalent that it has become the norm…. if u wanna know my name, ask, and be a nice chap 😉

  12. I don’t use my real name as a profile name. But as stated by someone else, if I see it’s going to become something more than just a chat online, I’m going to let them know my first name. It’s going to take a LONG time for someone to earn the trust to know my last name. I’ve been Facebook stalked. Learned my lesson. Not going there again.

  13. Most of my Internet handles wouldn’t even function as real names, and that’s the way I like it (and that’s the way I like it).

But if somebody asks what my name is, I’ll tell them straight up. It’s not as important as everybody seems to think it is.

@Zero Moonfeather: The real world isn’t Death Note. Sorry.

  14. My first name is very rare and easy to google. So I do use a fake name online. But I usually tell my real  name before or right after going to bedroom, or on the way there.
