Portland’s Openly Gay Mayor Caught in Scandal with Intern

Sam Adams

Portland, Oregon mayor Sam Adams is in hot water after admitting to a sexual relationship with an 18-year-old legislative intern named Beau Breedlove (with that name, let's hope he's a bottom). Adams, one of the nation's few openly gay mayors, insists the relationship did not begin until the intern was 18. However, there's plenty here for his detractors to jump on. Let's see how this one plays out.

Read the Mayor's full statement after the JUMP:

"I want to publicly acknowledge a mistake I have made and I want to apologize for it.

In the past, I have characterized my relationship with Beau Breedlove as purely non-sexual. That is not true. Beau Breedlove and I had a sexual relationship for a few months in the summer of 2005 after he turned 18 years of age.

I should have been honest at the time about the true nature of my relationship with Beau Breedlove when questions about my relationship with him first surfaced publicly in October 2007. In fact, Beau encouraged me to be honest about the facts of our relationship. I am deeply sorry that I asked him to lie for me.

I lied at the time because I was afraid that people would believe untrue rumors, being circulated by an undeclared mayoral opponent, that I had broken a law involving sexual relations with a minor. But this is not a good excuse.

Until today, with the exception of Beau, I have not discussed with anyone the true nature of my relationship with him: not with my colleagues, staff, friends or family.

I apologize to Beau for asking him to lie for me. I apologize to my colleagues for my poor handling of this matter. I apologize to the people of Portland for my dishonesty. I should have been truthful from the beginning."

  1. They are both consenting adults. Their sexual relationship is none of anyone else’s business, and he had every right to keep it to himself.

  2. what scadal? he had sex. only in USA is this a scandal. Id say..”so what, I fucked an 18yo, good for me, you should try one”

  3. I guess Ed doesnt understand A. He lied about it 2. It was a govt intern and who really knows if was actually 18 or this is another lie… I think he should resign and reserve some dignity, unless you think all our public officials should be able to lie and get away with it

  4. Hes 18 for gods sake so what if they had sex, everyone has sex. For the anonymous who knows who has slept with who. Lets just keep what happens in the bedroom in the bedroom. Business is business. I could understand why he would want to keep this hush hush because of his political status. The media would run wild with information like this.

  5. I agree it is a common thing for men to have sex when thay can with whom they can. Gay or straight it is the nature of men. Not a scandal.

  6. It’s a matter of professionalism – that’s the scandal. Interns are there to gain experience in politics, not sexual experience. That he lied about it when it came up is a serious concern because it opens the question of how many other times has he directly misled or lied to his constituents.

  7. The whole concept of Interns is part of the issue. You place someone in the hands of a mentor. They build personal trust and social bonds with contacts in the field. Distasteful behavior is not illegal. Its just sex and power. All healthy people have good sex when they find the right partner. Some of us don’t care who has sex with whom and consider it none of our business. Those people who do care are irrational. Most young people explore their sexuality with a normal healthy curiosiity that in today’s society is publicly promoted to sell them all kinds of products, services, priviledges and entertainment BEFORE they reach the age of 18. So MOST young people start trying to have sexual inter-actions before puberty. Thats healthy development that is natural in rural areas where kids grow up on a farm. In the cities it becomes a taboo subject with public shame and ridicule. So the incentive to lie and keep secrets becomes part or that pointless foolish wicked game. The fact of the matter is that people who send their kids off to become interns need to have the “predators are out there” talk with their own kids.
