Pet Shop Boys: “Axis”

Just to put things into perspective, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe have been working together as Pet Shop Boys for thirty-two years. That’s longer than I’ve been alive! And yet, despite this—or because of it—they’re still going strong and keeping things moving as they prepare to release their twelfth studio album Electric (the follow-up to last year’s mostly excellent Elysium). The legendary pop duo worked with producer Stuart Price on nine new “euphoric” dance songs, including eight originals, a cover of Bruce Springsteen‘s 2007 track “Last To Die” and a collaboration with UK rapper Example. There’s also a song on the tracklist with the oh-so-promising title “Love is a bourgeois construct”. I don’t know why, but I’m kind of obsessed with that.

Earlier this week, we were treated to the first taste of the project in the form of “Axis”, a throbbing electro number that people who know more about dance music than me have attributed to a heavy Giorgio Moroder influence. It definitely sets the mood for the carefree feeling they’re striving for on Electric, and it’ll be interesting to hear how the rest of the album turned out.

  1. They’ve been one of my top five favorite acts since the beginning. Never expected to still see them turning out such great music after 32 years! Saw them three times live (a MUST!) and hoping for number four when they play Chicago on Sept. 28th!

  2. 1. Seeing them in Philly Sept 22 and I can’t wait!

    2. “That’s longer than I’ve been alive!” On behalf of the 40+ crowd, fuck you, DeWitt! 😉 Keep up the good work
