Screw everything on American radio stations right now. The best new song came out overseas back in June, delivered to our ears by Nigerian-born goddess Temi Dollface. Her refreshing single “Pata Pata” makes up for a lackluster summer of pop music, in which a tragically dumb song about good girls knowing they want it dominated the charts.
Aesthetically, the music video for “Pata Pata” will cause you to draw parallels to Janelle Monáe. Musically, the song might remind you of those times Beyoncé “borrows” from traditional African music and pop. Thematically, I’d say it’s on a similar page to Jade Alston‘s criminally overlooked single “Sober“, but nobody would know what the heck I was talking about.
Is it repetitive? Yes. Will it get stuck in your head? Yes. Will you learn to love it? Yes.
