No Wonder Why Whitney Houston Couldn’t Come Out

It will be the first anniversary of Whitney Houston’s death next month. To commemorate the occasion, Whitney’s mom Cissy Houston has released a memoir about her and her superstar daughter. As the parents of famous people are wont to do when they write books about their kids, Cissy sat down for an interview with your deity and mine. Oprah spoke with Cissy about Whitney’s death, Whitney’s drug use, and most importantly (to this blog) – whether or not Whitney was a lesbian. Houston reportedly had a long-term relationship with her former creative director, assistant, and best friendĀ Robyn Crawford. Those rumors followed her right up until her death. I know, who the fuck cares if Nippy ate pussy? Well, society wants everything labeled and quantified. Society dislikes ambivalence. Also, for the scandal hounds (J. Harvey <—- guilty) Whitney having had a secret lesbian relationship is hot. Anyway, my theory has always been that Whitney married Bobby Brown to kill those rumors. Frankly, I feel that they only enforced them. Only a lesbian would pick a man that unattractive and useless for her beard wedding.

In her book, Cissy spilled the tea on what she thought of Robyn:

I knew I didn’t want Robyn around my daughter, and I told [Whitney] that. There wasn’t much I could do though. [Whitney] liked Robyn. She was past the age when I could forbid her from seeing someone. Kids have a mind of their own when they get older. They want to experiment with all kinds of things. And I don’t know if it was more than that.

If what you take away from that is Cissy didn’t want her daughter to be a dyke, you are very insightful:

After reading the excerpt, Winfrey asks Cissy, “Would it have bothered you if your daughter, Whitney, was gay?”

“Absolutely,” Cissy said.

“You would not have liked that?”

“Not at all,” she responds.

“You wouldn’t have condoned it?”

“No.”

Watch the vid and check O’s face when Cissy confirms she’s an elderly bigot. I imagine there was a “…and then this bitch came out and said she would have had a problem with Whitney being gay and I wanted to tell her, boo! TELL HER THAT YOU AND I ARE IN LOVE AND WE DON”T NEED THE APPROVAL OF CUNTS LIKE HER!” conversation with Gayle King that evening.

Look, I know old people were raised up in a different time. It’s not an excuse but it is what it is. If Whitney were gay, this goes a long way to explaining why she wasn’t open about it.

  1. Cissy Houston is almost 80 or so years old. She doesn’t see things the way people do now when it comes to being gay. She is a Mom that only wanted the best for her kid. There are not many parents that would want their kids to be gay….they would love them IF they were, but I don’t think any straight parent would say, “Sure….I want my kid to grow up gay.”

  2. We know Whitney loved her mother, but Cissy was one of the sole reasons why Whitney lived in misery. Cissy better pray long and hard for her soul. God and Whitney are waiting for her ass!!!

  3. My own mother would have probably said the same thing before I came out. I know she said similar things before she knew for sure. After she knew, she grew to love my partner and never actually spoke of it. My mother was about Cissy’s age.

This is all to say, Cissy Houston never had to confront this issue about her daughter head on so she could continue to be bigoted about it. Take what she says with a grain of salt. A lot of parents say these things before being faced down.
