Niecy Nash Tackles Marriage Equality on DWTS

Niecy Nash, Louis Van Amstel, waltz, marriage equality, gay rights

To draw a parallel between anti-miscegenation laws and the government's current stance on same-sex marriage, comedian Niecy Nash and her Dancing With The Stars partner Louis Van Amstel joined together to tell the story of an interracial couple in the early 1960s.

"I can't imagine how it would feel to not be able to be with somebody that you love," Nash tells her openly gay dancing partner with tears in her eyes. "Like, I love my boyfriend so much, and if I could not be with him because a law said that or because society said that… I would be devastated."

Van Amstel's response is equally touching: "I hear you. I'm still in that boat. We've come a long way, but you've got to help me fight my battle too." I don't know about you, but I got a little teary-eyed watching the clip! Is there any chance that Niecy Nash could win this competition? Because she's kind of my favorite person in the world.

  1. Btw, I don’t often watch DWTS, but does anyone else find that the vocal arrangements of the accompanying songs are quite poor and often off key? It’s in stark contrast to the great music used for SYTYCD, and is the only really off putting thing about the production of the show.

  2. Stewart, That’s because the producers obviously don’t want to pay the licensing fees to play the original versions of the songs. Thankfully, So You Think You Can Dance doesn’t mind paying the extra $. That’s why it’s the better show, despite some of the losers that the teenage female hormone-obsessed viewers elect as winners with their votes.

  3. Stewart, Jeremy: It could also be that by doing live arrangements, they can tailor the music (both in editing for time AND adjusting for content in ballads) to the dances making the songs more easily fit to the style of dance and the necessary tempo. It allows greater versatility in song choice for the performances.
