Michael Kiwanuka: “I’ll Get Along”

It’s amazing that it’s taken me this long to find out about Michael Kiwanuka. The 24 year-old (!) musician’s name has floating around the internet for a while now—especially after he won BBC’s Sound of 2012 poll back in January—yet it wasn’t until this Monday that his music finally reached my ears.

The track that sold me was “I’ll Get Along”, a retro throwback that easily justifies critics’ constant comparisons to soul legends like Bill Withers and Otis Redding. Though I’ve yet to pick up Kiwanuka’s debut album Home Again, a small part of me wants to be that pretentious dude who buys it on vinyl… Because, really, would there be any better way to listen to this song?
