Massachusetts Is Suing The US Government In The Name of Equality

Massachusetts
The United States government is being sued. Why? Because Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley is awesome enough to call them out on this Defense of Marriage Act bullshit. The lawsuit she filed seeks to gain benefits for approximately 16,000 legally wed same-sex couples, stating that the law violates the state's "sovereign authority to define and regulate marriage."
Can you even handle waiting to see what happens with this? More importantly, why the hell is DOMA still in effect? A really interesting statement by a Queerty commenter has been spinning around in my head for the past hour or so–"If Obama, plays politics to stay in power and so to keep that power never ever moves on our rights, that is no different from a politician that runs for office as an opponent of us." I know it's not entirely related to this situation, but would you agree?

  1. I’ve long thought DOMA ridiculous. So many politicians have avoided the issue by proclaiming it an issue for the states. Then they turn around a negate any state that should choose equality over bigotry. A state suing the Federal Government is a dicey thing, but I hope it works!

  2. It’s funny how the right-wingers are all about states’ rights unless it involves gay people. If a state chooses to provide same-sex marital rights within that state, the federal government should recognize those marriages as having the same validity as all the “opposite marriages.”
