Mariah Carey & Miguel: “#Beautiful”

Who has the audacity to include a hashtag in their song title, aside from Mariah Carey and maybe RuPaul? This is actually happening, people! We have entered an unfortunate point in the digital age where social media trends have leaked into pop music. Now, if Mariah Carey’s new single isn’t a hit on the charts, it’ll at least be a hit on Twitter! It’s a bold move that’s somewhere between obnoxious and genius. But mostly obnoxious.

Yet despite all this blatant and unavoidable obnoxiousness, “#Beautiful” is a significantly classier affair than Carey’s last effort “Triumphant” and less forgettable than Oz the Great and Powerful soundtrack offering “Almost Home“. R&B crooner Miguel can make panties (or jockstraps) drop by simply opening his mouth, and even with the Bruno Mars-lite production of this track, he helps bring a grown and sexy vibe to this duet. It might not be my new favorite song, but you’ve got to admit it’s a step up from playing second-fiddle to Rick Ross.

(But, more importantly, can we discuss that the dance remixes of “Triumphant” were legitimately amazing?)

  1. “Pulled this off” might be a stretch. It’s a testament to will.i.am’s power that I completely forgot he did that.

  2. I don’t even think Ru put a “hashtag” in front of a song title yet. BTW – when did the pound symbol become “hashtag” anyway?

  3. While I think this song is so-so at best, I think Mariah needs to get back to music and get off American Idol fast… her annoying, rambling “critiques” barely have an intelligent thought in it, and I don’t think I can take another #POW or dahhhling comment, all while staring off in space (to show off her best side of her face?) and adjusting her hair to show off her ample rack. The only plus is it is fun to see Nicki totally pown her ass when they bicker… Simmer Down, Sir… lol.

  4. More important; Is Carey still relevant in the pop/R&B music scene?

She looks and sounds a bit outdated and her new work is quite irrelevant and not worth remembering.

She used to be a great ballad singer with amazing people writing for her, now it’s more of bad choices, bad music, bad overall.

  5. She co-wrote most of her 90s ballads with Walter Afanasieff, they weren’t written for her.

  6. She wrote and writes her own stuff… On top of that, if you ever listened to the albums beyond singles in the 90s, there was more to them than that.

To answer your question, radio is playing the song already and its made a massive dent in iTunes, so yes, she is. *turns inner gay off*
