Mariah Carey Is Now An Award-Winning Actress

Mariah Carey, award-winning actress, Palm Springs International Film Festival, Breakthrough Performance Award, January 5, Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire, Jennifer Hudson, social worker

Who cares if her latest album Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel didn't perform so well? Mariah Carey will soon become an award-winning actress, and she won't have time to worry about bathing in Windex and all that hullaballoo. Yes, you read that correctly–Mariah Carey is winning an award. An award for her acting.

As much as I'd like to tell you that this is a belated acknowledgment for her work in Glitter, Carey is actually being honored for her role as a social worker in Precious. I haven't gotten a chance to see the film yet, but I've heard she wasn't half bad. Some people have even said she was good! And some people don't even know what she was.

In any case, the Palm Springs International Film Festival will be bestowing their Breakthrough Performance Award upon Mimi on January 5th of next year. Previous recipients of the award include Jennifer Hudson, Marion Cotillard, Felicity Huffman and Freida Pinto. For those who have seen the film, do you think Carey deserves this one?

  1. watched it last nite… of all the characters i don’t know if she deserves it the most.
gabby [the girl who played precious] probably deserves it more because she gives a really believable portrayal of the character. she was on the screen the entire movie, the movie was based around her, etc.
or monique’s character might deserve the award because by the end of that movie you really think she’s a horrible, vile woman…
this movie is literally one of the most powerful movies i’ve ever seen. i hear the book was rivetting, but once you see it on the screen it’s an entirely different thing.

  2. I will say that I was extremely suprised at how well she did in this movie. If I had to give an award, though, I would hand it to the overlooked Paula Patton who is playing Precious’s teacher. Patton witnesses Precious and her eventual flourishing into a completely different person by the movie’s end. She gives a truly subtle, loving performance.

  3. This movie is one of the most amazing, heart shattering experiences i have ever had. For hours after i could not stop thinking about it, and even now, i cry… does she deserve the award, just about as much as everyone else in this movie does. Everyone in this movie just, wow, they just knocked it out.

  4. Incredible movie. Monique and Gaboury Sidibie will most likely receive a number of nominations come January, so I’m happy to see Mariah earn some well deserved recognition. She didn’t have a lot of screen time, but she really did a fantastic job with what she was given.

  5. Absolutely phenomenal film – EVERYONE deserves an award, especially Gabourey Sidibe and Mo’Nique. Mariah Carey was also quite good, and I don’t begrudge her the win. For me, this is undoubtedly the film of the year.

  6. Mariah was transformed into this character.
She is definitely deserving of praise and recognition. While Mo’Nique and Gabi may be getting Oscars, this is a very nice honor for Mariah.

  7. EVERY ACTOR IN THIS FILM WAS AMAZING!
however. i feel that it was rushed through production and the script wasn’t fully developed…and the editing was atrocious.
but i do think everyone should see this film because of the phenomenal performances given by each and every woman in the movie.
