M.I.A. Is Rebellious (Oh, And Madge Wasn’t Bad)

Shit was lavish! How much did that gay Ancient Greek/Roman/Egyptian/She-Ra Princess of Power/Xena/douches in the club/Cheerleading Camp/Jesus Tent Revival gay spectacle cost? “World Peace” in glitter on the floor of a stadium, hot slaves (cheers) pulling your diva float, and making Cee-Lo palatable does not come cheap! I’ll say it. Show was hot. Of course we all H8 on her cuz’ she’s Madonna, but bitch WERKS. Yes, the part where LMFAO had her in the wheelbarrow position and she was desperately thrusting her legs back to show that she’s still got it but it was more like she was drowning in the senior center’s swimming pool made me sad. She’s 53. But I’m…none of your fucking business…and I couldn’t pull off half the crotch-thrusts, dancer molestation, and deep knee-bends she did.

As for Ms. M.I.A., SOMEONE needed to let us know she was still an edgy bitch from the streets despite appearing in the most commercial event known to man. Here’s what I took away from it. She hired me for a couple of tracks, she wanted to use my street cred, I went along with it because the money was huge, but I want to make sure I never sell out again. Right? She’s not big enough to have her career shattered and end up shilling Nutrisystem like Janet Jackson’s nipple, so she’ll be fine. It was definitely an eye-roll, though.

Watch the big gay show after the jump. Like it, hate it, could care less?

  1. I was so glad to see Madonna sticking with Givenchy Couture. Considering how badly the show could have gone, it was really quite good for what it was.

  2. i thought it was a really good show. i’m glad madonna didn’t go with a whole “OMG, look how dirty and controversial i’m being” like she could have. pretty classy, actually. cee-lo green was awesome. as for M.I.A. and her whole middle finger thing, of course, everyone’s making a big deal about it, but it’s like…who gives a shit? 95% of the people watching it probably didn’t even see it til someone told them it happened.

  3. Just when you think that Madonna is washed up, she comes up with this.     Love her or hate her, the simple fact is that you HAD to watch this show once the performance started (and her reveal, with the giant feathers coming down to show her in a shiny gold gown, was pure genius).

And her ability to create a compulsion to watch is what made Madonna into an iconic superstar.

  4. Yeah, great.  NFL paid how much $$$ ?  First shot back to the game is a comparison between  team players with Gaga’s “Edge of Glory” playing in the background.  When I was 12 my parents took me to see Marlene Dietrich cause she was a legend.  I wonder what 12 year olds though last night?  YAWN…..

  5. I guess I was disappointed that her grand entrance didn’t turn out to be a more obvious homage to Liz Taylor’s scene in “Cleopatra.”  It was set up that way but then failed to deliver.  I also thought the obvious lip-synching was pretty bad.  And the fact that Madonna had to “pad” her performance with Nicki Minaj, M.I.A., CeeLo Green, and LMFAO, not to mention the Mormon Tabernacle Choir clone, is a clear admission that she realizes her relevance to today’s music is over.  I thought her attemps at dancing were pretty lame too.  Other than that, it was great.  And oh yeah, I still think her new single is an embarrassment.  Have we really been waiting for Madge to re-do Toni Basil’s “Oh Mickey”???

  6. Great show, loved the staged, good set list. Annoyed by the (horrible, over dramatized) lip synching. I expected it of her but still. Kudos Cee-Lo for singing and actually sounding great. She was doing crazy shit but its not like she actually does hard choreography.

Sidenote, I always find it interesting how Britney and Madonna get away with lipping. Or anyone who we don’t categorize as a singer. At least J. Lo and Janet integrate it and try to sing live depending on what they’re doing. Not to mention, they actually dance their big asses off.

  7. I think it’s great. fantastic production values. 4 minutes didn’t even have costume changes (but great sets). Don’t even mention GiveIt2Me’s video! But she was leaving Warner so it makes sense.

This video is great. People seem to be missing the irony of Madonna. If you look at her earlier works when she was in her 20s and 30s, she seems to portray a somewhat mature image. Mature in terms of using music as an “artform”. Lookt at Like A Prayer, Justify My Love, Erotica, Human Nature. She would be clothed a bit more in those videos.

Ever since her mid to late 40s however, she has dropped her seriousness and embraced a more “youthful” interpretation towards her work. She’s always in leotards now, she started the leotard craze! She’s always singing about being a “girl” and about teen relatioship kind of things.

People are taking her too seriously. She’s just kidding around and playing with stereotypes – as usual. Of course now that she’s 50-something she’s gonna go all “Teenybopper”. She’s never ever done that before. While people say she’s hanging on to her youth she’s actually amplifying her age. We all know she’s 50-something, interviewers ask her about it all the time! She’s not trying to go back in time, she’s actually making fun of the whole “age-issue”.

But as usual, the age obssessed among us will write her off and take her at face-value.

I mean seriously, look at her in the video. Look at how she walks and twirls her hair. She’s acting like a young bimbo. She even has a little baby and she’s breastfeeding when we all know that women at her age have usually been through menopause and cannot even have babies let alone breast feed! It’s a big joke that seems to fly over most people’s heads.

If there’s anything I’ve ever liked about Madonna is that she is not much of a suck up. Well, I’m 22 so I don’t know about the past, I really got to hear her in the 2000s and a little before then (Ray of Light). What I mean is that she doesn’t focus her videos toward a certain group of people. She makes her videos like they are for her. She doesn’t have homoerotic men gyrating in panties or high heels like other videos I’ve seen. She’s a straight woman, so all her men are manly, and they are rarely sexualized in an obvious way. Her Sorry video had a beefcake guy (who got thrown out of the van in favour of a man who looks like my neighbour). Even her Superbowl performance intro had men that a straight woman could react to, unlike Kylie’s version.

As for the song, I think it’s alright. I did hope for something new so wasn’t thrilled with the Martin Sloveig’s “Hello” sample, but it works after listening for a while. The Dubstep breakdown in killer though. And she’s so hot in white lace.

  8. “Vogue” was awesome. I have never seen her do that song bad ever. She kills it everytime. I’m glad she did “Like a Prayer” instead of “Holiday”.  M.I.A however needs to go somewhere and sit down.

  9. Madonna put on a great show. As for the lip syncing, all the vocal tracks for the NFL, including the national anthem are pre-recorded (yes even Whitney’s amazing version was), because of FCC concerns, Been that way for a while.

  10. I love The MADONNA But:I was not impressed with last night’s performance. The costume she wore was hideous and not sexy, the Egyptian gods of muscle were indidtinguishable and besides “Like A Prayer” it just fell flat for me. Madonna is still AOK with me but let’s face it:She’s no CHER!!!!

  11. Madonna was it in the 80s, but its not the 80s anymore, she needs to hang it up, know when our time has passed, she is rich, she doesnt need to prove anything, her performance at the superbowl was passable but her day is done

  12. It was great, lip-synching included. But to the person praising Cee-Lo: Uh, EVERYONE lip-synched. It was pretty clear nobody made a single peep, not even the choir. I mean, they may have been singing, but that entire thing was a track. Nobody was heard. That had to be due to the logistics because does sing live, in spite of Elton John’s embarrassing hatred of her. I think it’s excusable. Michael Jackson lip-synched Motown 25, Whitney Houston lip-synched the star-spangled banner…Madonna can lip-synch this. And will be live on tour.

  13. I spent the night reading a great book, so I guess I will have to at some point when I actually care to take a look at the video footage.

  14. Really? I thought it was pretty clear that it was actually Madonna singing… Maybe that’s just me, but I was pretty sure she wasn’t lip-synching.

  15. When the hell are we getting a blog about David Beckham’s new underwear line, not to mention his fucking hot commercial!!!
