Linking Oral Sex and Throat Cancer

HPV Throat Cancer

Can oral sex lead to throat cancer? The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) has been linked with throat cancer and ABC News has an article on the issue today.

Although oral sex is often regarded as safer than intercourse, HPV is transfered this way, and as it attaches to the area inside the mouth, it can lead to throat cancer. This is likely the explanation for the spike in throat cancer in healthier and younger non-smokers.

Men are also 35% more likely than women to develop HPV-related oral cancer, according to a study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. So to the men and women out there, don’t fall for the assumption that oral sex doesn’t carry it’s own set of risks, because throat cancer is a big one.
