Isn’t Complaining About Katy Perry So Last Year?

Katy Perry

When Katy Perry started getting hype for “I Kissed a Girl”, I was definitely annoyed, but it actually had very little to do with her “fake bisexuality” or trivialization of gay culture. The song was just fucking unbearable, unfortunately it was also inescapable last summer. Whether people were designating it as the song of summer or bitching over how offensive it is, listening to them was as frustrating as listening to the actual track.

And then Perry released “Hot N Cold”. Despite how irritating it was that she continued to reinforce gender norms with lines like “You change your mind like a girl changes clothes”, it was catchy as fuck, stupid as fuck and completely addictive. I couldn’t get enough, feeling too shamed to tell friends I liked it (out of fear that they’d say “I told you that you’d like her!” or “I can’t believe you’re actually supporting that trifling ass ho!”)

Months and months passed, and then Kelly Clarkson released “My Life Would Suck Without You”. I found myself underwhelmed. It seemed as if when Kelly delved into the depths of My December, Perry snuck in and stole the pop-kingdom she established. I shudder to think of the response I’ll get by saying this… but Kelly just seems superfluous in a post-Katy world. If anything, she needs to switch up her style–maybe even go country…

But I digress. A lot. I’ve come here to address a recent occurrence in which Beth Ditto of The Gossip slammed Perry by saying, “I’m so offended. She’s just riding on the backs of our culture, without having to pay any of the dues and not being actually lesbian or anything at all.”

Perry has replied to the jab by saying this: “I heard that she said something about me. I don’t want to get into a slanging war with anybody, so I don’t want to say anything bad about her. But I’m not impressed. I’ve learned in the past year that one artist should never insult another artist’s music — it’s tacky.”

You know what’s even tackier? The fact that Ditto waited until she was promoting an album to voice her opinion on the song. I respect the girl, but she’s merely trying to create a scandal to sell copies. Despite what you might assume from what I wrote above, I’m not what one would call a “fan” of Perry… but I like that she took the high road this time around.

  1. It seems to be relatively easy for anyone in any position to come up with negative or derogatory remarks about individuals they are jealous of. Fact – KP is a success. Fact – KP worked hard for her success.
Also, what’s with this era of exclusivity? As if people who aren’t part of the “gay” community shouldn’t be allowed to explore our community and profit of off it. I would wager that more then 90 percent of the gay population have givin next to nothing to our community but getting smashed at the bar and syphilis. Yet these individuals have certainly profited of off the work of others. Enjoying the relative acceptance, and safety bought for by the work of others.
Our community is so fragmented and abused form within. Lets focus on those issues before we start rounding in on starlets like KP etc.
    FUCK!
Also for those of you who write in to comment on grammar. Yep. That is definitely the most productive use of your time. Congrats.

  2. I thought for sure before I clicked on the link that this entry would be a complaint about Katy Perry’s song ‘Ur So Gay’
    …I was wrong
