Is True Blood Getting Too Gay?

It’s time for your weekly dose of gratuitous True Blood nudity! Today’s edition comes on the heels of two interesting news items related to the show. For starters, Stephen Moyer and openly bisexual star Anna Paquin have officially tied the knot in Malibu. Congratulations to them!

On a completely different note, Philadelphia Eagles player Todd Herremans has been put on blast for tweeting about the show’s “barrage of homosexuality”. Although most have dismissed his remarks as pure ignorance, some have been led to ask–is the gay content on True Blood going overboard? Obviously, we’re going to say “no”.

  1. Too gay ??? Is there such a thing? … and have you seen some of the straight sex scenes on allot of TV shows? I take offense to the term “too gay”. I think a better term is It’s about time!

  2. No, I’m so tired of hearing it, but in Sweden have all TV channels have embraced that it is OK to be gay! And many of my girl`s and gay-friends think it’s cute when they see guys kissing and making out together … Even my straight friends think it’s okay, it’s not strange at all …

  3. It all depends on the next couple of shows. With last night show of the V dream scene was a bit odd, and then you have the king of Mississippi who is just a wack case. Not the best example of for being a gay man.
Now the Eric and Talbot shot a couple of weeks ago was hot until Eric steaked Talbot.
Also what about Jason in the first season he was naked in ever show, now you don’t hardly see him and surly not naked.

  4. Showing a naked guy in a TV show or movie doesn’t make it “gay”. And even showing a couple of naked guys in the same scene doesn’t make it “gay”. Now if they’re having sex or making out with each other, then yes, that’s obviously “gay”.
In regard to “True Blood”, it seems to me that it’s rather obvious that all vampires are clearly bisexual. They choose either male or female partners according to their current needs or desires, even tho their main preference seems to be the same as it was when they were still human.
I think it freaks a lot of straight guys out when they see a naked man on screen…and if there are two…then they immediately think the show is too “gay”. They certainly don’t seem to mind it when 2 or more girls are naked on screen!
And let’s face it, we still don’t see anywhere near as much male nudity on screen as we do female nudity. Producers are still paranoid about it & afraid of getting censored. I’m not really in favor of seeing rampant nudity on any TV show, but when it’s a selective show like “True Blood” & the nudity is both natural & crucial to the scene at hand, then I see nothing wrong with it. I wonder if all these straight guys who think “True Blood” is “too gay” would say the same about a football TV show that regularly had locker room & shower scenes as an integral part of the series? Hmmm?

  5. Of course, it is….Alan Ball isn’t exactly straight. I love all the male nudity, especially those hot werewolves…woof.

  6. seriously? what kind of homophobic, self-hating rag are you trying to write here. and about something so inconsequential. please instruct us how to pretend you didn’t think this drivel, let alone write and publish it?! i mean, whose side are you on, anyway? i’d like to get back to the good ol’ wholesome family smut you typically serve up. leave the “thinking” to another blog. thanks.

  7. Let’s consider all of the thousands of shows that thrust HETEROSEXUALITY in your face, a few straight men feeling uncomfortable, who cares! They should go watch Entourage or something.

  8. This reminds me of when Ireland banned the music video for REM’s “Losing My Religion” based on its “homoerotic” content. My perception is that people aren’t as comfortable with male nudity as they are with female. I haven’t found that there’s more man-on-man story than male-female, but True Blood isn’t shy about showing a man’s ass, and people perceive that as homoerotic regardless of its context.

  9. Well, all their depictions of homosexuals seems to be either doing drugs or killing someone. Not exactly the best depictions ever, eh?

  10. Must we go over the same old same old??? Guys like each others company wether it leads to sex or not, mucking around behind the school toilets, butt slapping in the footy dressing rooms. We all must agree that the male form nude is a thing of wonder and beauty, lets all just enjoy the experience.Male bonding and affection is just normal.

  11. I think this is the only show with more than one gay/gay couple…and everyone on the show is a freak with problems, and forced to interact. Sound like real life with a supernatural spin.
I think its really funny that guys are getting so worked up about you posting this ‘too gay’ question. As if you didn’t do it to provoke a response and increase traffic! LOL…helllooooooo…its his JOB!

  12. Homophobic? Now there’s a term that is thrown around too much. Again, thin skinned. Don’t flame me. Think about it! You can’t take someone saying too gay? Sheesh. More important things to worry about…..

  13. thank you Tam is an ass lets talk about other things besides this dumb show whos up for some real quality television like Modern Family?

  14. I wouldn’t fear about being too “gay ” considering the number of too”straight” scenes we have to put up with every day. But it may eventually meet its demise by straight media paranoia. Also look in mainstream TV at all those Victoria’s Secret ads. Now suppose we were to have the SAME number of MEN’S underwear ads with the same visual content. Why have we not had those instead of the same boring Michael Jordan Hanes ads?? What, can’t show nearly nude sexy men in the same style the ladies get??? Unfortunately with a stright dominated entertainment world, we see the rapid death of things “too gay”. It happened to Disco and Techno music in the 70’s and 80’s. when music got too “directed” to gay themes and popularity (Village People, Pet Shop Boys), the styles died out and replaced (first with southern Rock and second with “Grunge,” Hip Hop and Alternative”). We’re seeing a slow rise in dance music on the airwaves, how long before it too gets torpedoed by homophobia?

  15. Too gay? No. Too porny? It’s been that from the start.

I absolutely despise shows like True Blood. They’re nothing but porn masquerading as mainstream television.

I am not a prude and I don’t mind porn – occasionally I LOVE porn (I wouldn’t be visiting this site otherwise, obviously) – but I do like to keep porn and actual story-telling separated. A lot of HBO shows use porn as a cheap shock factor, they have no substance, no depth, no story. If you’re going to tell me a story, tell me a story, if there are sex scene in it, let them be an integral part of the story and character development. I am an European, I don’t get all “Ooh, naked ass and nipples, how scandalous, I’ll be so trendy if I watch that!”, so you’re not going to impress me with fucking.

When you have unending porn without actual story to build the characters who do the porn I get bored, especially considering the fact that I am VERY particular about my porn and I find certain kinks sexy, others absolutely repulsive and I deliberately search for the latter and ignore the former.

A show that uses pornography as a shock factor to draw in an audience takes this choice away from me and forces me to watch characters I don’t like, neither physically nor emotionally, have sex in order to get to the actual damn plot, and that’s just gross.

I’ve only seen part of S1, and I remember how much I HATED Sookie’s brother as a character – bigoted, fugly retard who needed to stfu and go away – and they gave him sex scenes in each and every episode, sometimes more than once an episode. I threw up in my mouth a little every time they did that.

True Blood is absolute trash, as was Rome before it.

  16. Unlike many of those who love to criticize works of creative art (books, movies, plays, etc), I have actually READ all of the Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris (the basis for True Blood)…there is plenty of sex in the books, gay and straight…while I do wish the TV series would stick more closely to the wonderful novels on which they are based, the gay part is sticking to the originals!
