Have you ever attempted to dabble in portraiture? Speaking from personal experience, it’s not as easy as it looks! You can’t just go in snapping shots of people’s faces and hoping you get lucky. There’s an art to getting your subjects comfortable enough that they’ll let their personality shine through on camera.
San Francisco-based photographer Ryan Ricketts seems to understand this concept. His portraits capture those moments of warmth, laughter, confidence and vulnerability. And it’s only icing on the cake that several of his models are extremely cute…

He looks to be of the caliber of the photographer who took my senior pictures…. But that guy in the last two pics? He’s my new boyfriend. He just doesn’t know it yet.
I’m not a fan of portrait photogaphers, since I’m not fan of portraits, how ever, you’re right, it’s not that easy to get a real good portrait as it seems. We don’t look at it as so artistic because the shots are way simpler, you normally don’t go so workful in lightning or art or deco or make-up… but the truth is, because of the same simplistic of the portrait, are not easy to shoot to make not any portrait, but The Portrait. I dunno, I just haven’t seen many school-book-photographers who actually take portraists like this guy, and most of the guys who take pics for weddings, events and else, yeah theyre good but formula good, all the pics are the same.. you see the difference between them and this. Good place of lightining, good choose of balance, good choose of contrast and sharpening, and those taken out of studio very nice camera position… I’m not into portraits, but this guy knows what he’s doing, not to say he knows very well who to choose to take pics of (damn, this guys are really handsome, I would love to take a coffee or a beer with most of them… even something else!) so kuddos for Ryan.
