Hot Flash: Mariusz Kocur

We’re all perfectly aware the male physique is a wonderful thing. However, it’s not always easy to capture on film, and you’ve got to appreciate the photographers who truly catch the beauty of it all. We’d argue that Mariusz Kocur is one of those photographers.

Sure, you could contend that throwing any muscular man in front of a camera will lead to an astounding image, but we all know that’s not really the case. It takes legitimate talent to snap a picture like the one above, which encourages you to explore every ripple of a sexy man’s body. Mmm, is it getting hot in here? Or is it just those glistening abdominal muscles?

  1. These most certainly are not crap! God, what’s with the bitchy comments the past several weeks. If you don’t like it, don’t comment you dipsticks.

  2. You’ve got to be kidding here? These images have all the highlights overblown, they are overedited in photoshop and don’t even look natural. He did a fair job but isn’t the master of the male nude or torso. NO WAY!
I hate the harsh lighting and overblown highlights. Thats what you get when you shoot male nudes with digital. Should be shooting those images with medium format film and guess what?—not blown highlights and images much more pleasing to look at.
If you are going to promote someone–at least–not some nasty porn look rip-off.

  3. These models are not representative of the average naked male. I have no problem presenting them as a fantasy but lets face it, that is all they are for the majority of us average males.

  4. Wow yes what negative people. Did some one step on your dream to take pictures so you have to bash anyone that has made it. And dinasore Gary the new media is digital that way we can change things easly. Well I have down loaded most of the pics for my phone background once I’m out of the homophobic job feild I’ll be able to set them.

  5. Lots of side lighting, lots of contrast.

Imagine the voice of Ian McKellan as his character leaves the session of Congress in the 1st X-Man Movie…

“We’ve seen this all before, Charles.”

I contend that there’s more to art photography in the 21st century than oil and high contrast.

  6. I will say that they’re not BAD. In fact, they’re really beautiful photographs. However, I will agree with others in stating that they’re NOT ART!

Art tells a story, either directly and indirectly. This is… as dry as a spoonful of cinnamon. Even if the intent was not art, the use of oil-slicked flesh is overdone.

The way to see art (regardless of the medium) is if it’s memorable. Would I save these to my desktop for inspiration or further study? Appreciation of the male form even? No.

It’s what we (artists) call technically good. Good technique, dry execution.

  7. The photos are very nice (imho), but I have one thing to say regarding those models: “There’ll be more cake for me! Pass the milk.”

  8. Most of the compositions of these photos are lacking. I have no idea if this is an intended effect, an effect of cropping or an accident.

The lighting however is good, and especially works in the black and white photos, creating an interesting range from negative space to highlights.

  9. Sorry…what did you say…someone mentioned that the guy in the first pic had some serious abs…I couldn’t get past the big meaty nipples to check his belly…now seriously…what did you say…

  10. Gary I just cannot understand how U find time 2 blog being a world famous PHOTOGRAPHER and all it must be very difficult ….
