Hollywood Sucks: They’re Remaking “Baby Jane”

Writer/director Walter Hill is remaking Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?. “Y’ar in that chair, Blanche! Y’ar!”

Someone write something original! Jesus, there’s like 3,000,000 original screenplays floating around out there that are probably worth making and we keep cloning the same shit over and over and over. You watch – they’ll remake E.T. soon. The day after Spielberg kicks, Variety will announce Michael Bay is going to redo it but E.T. will have a gun and be blowing the heads off of Elliot’s friends.

For those of you who have never seen a black & white flick, What Ever Happened To Baby Jane? starring Bette Davis and Joan Crawford is campy awesomeness. Picture Grey Gardens but with torture and physical abuse. And that was just behind the scenes.

Who should play Jane and Blanche in 2013? Madonna and Lady Gaga? Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston? Dewitt and Steven Daigle?

p.s. It should be noted that there already has been a remake of Baby Jane, with the Redgrave sisters. Apparently, it wasn’t half-bad.

Check out a classic scene from the original after the JUMP:

  1. Between reboots of old classics, comic book movies and the young adult genre (i.e., Twilight, Harry Potter, Hunger Games, etc.), there really is NOTHING original for adults in the country.

  2. Apparently this was remade once before, the Redgrave sisters starred in it…pretty sure that went over like a lead balloon.

Funny though how this film has been kind of trending lately.

  3. The number of excellent films produced by Hollywood after 1963 can probably be counted on both hands.  McDonalds does not make the best hamburger nor do they claim to, however they sell the most.

  4. The Redgrave remake was toe-curlingly BAD. That’s why so few people have seen it.  But why remake a classic?  You can’t beat the original.

  5. Maybe I just woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning, or perhaps I’m already going down the curmudgeon path, but as far as I can see, the American entertainment landscape is littered with utter crap aimed directly at the twink/hip-hop/gamer youths of today.  30 or older, Hollywood would just as soon that you had suddenly ceased to exist.  I pretty much am relegated to PBS and torrenting a lot of the classics for any thoughtful entertainment.

  6. You can’t beat Bette Davis or Joan Crawford in the original.  No one did it or could do it better than these 2 Divas!  Chilling masterpiece at it’s best!

  7. The knee-jerk reaction against remakes always startles me.  First, remaking movies is hardly a new thing.  Since the start of the film industry in this country, films were frequently remade–plays were made into movies, which were then restaged as plays, etc.  Second, in the theatre, no one ever thinks twice about a revival as being a bad thing.  Third, sometimes remakes bring out new insights about an original film, or bring new meanings through different performances.  (After all, genre films are all about remaking one formula and slightly tweaking and re-telling.)  Fourth, parody is an art form that gay men have historically reveled in–what else is a remake by a kind of loving tribute?  Fifth, what is the cover of a song except for a remake?  And isn’t that what divas are all about?

  8. This might not be an actual remake of the original movie.  The film was based upon a novel of the same name; the producing studio can rightly claim that it is not doing a remake, but its own take on the novel.

  9. Seriously?  Does anyone 18-30 know who that is?
For todays youth market…the only possible pairing is Blaire and Serena from GOSSIP GIRL.

  10. 18-30 year olds would never go to that movie, but an army of queens would relish seeing  Bette Midler and Barbra Streisand in “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane”.

  11. I would rather pay $10-15 to see the original in the theatre, than see a crappy re-make.

It’s only a matter of time before re-makes of the following-

‘Gone With the Wind’ w/  Mila Kunis as Scarlett & Robert Pattinson as Rhett
‘Citizen Kane’ w/ Jack Black as Charles Foster Kane & Emma Stone as his mistress
‘True Grit’ w/ Liam Hemsworth as Rooster Cogburn
‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ w/ Selena Gomez as Holly Golighly & Shia LaBeouf as Paul
‘East of Eden’ w/ Taylor Lautner as Cal Trask

See this is rather fun, just cast actors/actress under 3o, in classic movies, assuming
that the moviegoers are tweens/pre-teens/teens, who have never heard of any of
the movies, and have no clue!

Anyone else whan to contribute to the future of TCM?

  12. oops, meant to use my post as- Christopher07

luckily I didn’t use all of my e-mail address, as the above isn’t correct,
and I won’t respond to any comments  😀

  13. The feud in version one was real.   The relationships between the sisters in the actual book – is very different.  The Redgrave sisters were different.  Not worse.   It’s very sad that the judgements people have are so extreme and once sided.

  14. There is already a drag remake, called “Baby Jane” that is fantastic! No one can replace Bette Davis or Joan Crawford but these drag ladies come close!
