HIV Court Case in Canada

Law and HIV

You’re hooking up with some guy. You ask his HIV status. He tells you negative, you forgot the condom
and you get HIV.  Is he legally
responsible for giving you the virus?

This is essentially the loaded question a Canadian court is contemplating. A 52-year-old Ontario man was charged with 2 accounts of
murder because he allegedly had unprotected sex with two women and knowingly
transmitted HIV to them. Later, these
two women died of AIDS-related diseases.

I won’t talk about the legal questions or ramifications of a
case like this. But it’s a good reminder
to get tested because according to the Center for Disease Control, 250,000
Americans or 25% of those who are positive in the U.S. don’t know their status.
