“AreYouSurprised” is the cute as hell soldier who came out to his Dad over the phone on the last day of DADT. The video of his experience has gone seriously viral (it was featured on a local newscast here in Boston last night), and it’s cool because it’s sure to give a lot of hope and encouragement to people still struggling with coming out.
That being said, Queerty had a link to the above picture and “AreYouSurprised” is not only courageous, he’s got a SWEET body.
Just because he wasn’t out yet didn’t mean he wasn’t taking pics of himself wearing only compression shorts and showing off his mean muscularity. We’re sure he was just saving this sort of pic for when he was ready to be out and proud and attract suitors. Right. *grin*

While I appreciate his service and bravery I almost feel like a lot of this is shameless, self-promotion. Yes the photos are nice and that’s probably the point but when looking at his YouTube channel he posts how he wants people to send him a new iPad, laptop, digital camera, clothes and a GoPro camera. That makes me question his motives.
He is a cutie, and I am glad his dad accepted him!
I agree 100% Why take such a personal moment and make it public? I too was disgusted by his promotion and his “I would love a new…” on his youtube page, I’m sure someone will send him all that and more. Ugh, another fame seeker. But thanks for being a soldier, that’s something I couldn’t do.
how nare people who deny our existence or validity as humans gonna be forced to know we are here and human without people like this. this video blog is fantastic. its very moving especially having been in serious relationships with military men. i’ve seen how hard it is to keep quiet or be accepted when in the armed forces and this was a raw candid video showing us his big step. its great but seriously guys? taking a great video and moment and degrading it into another one of those :look at his hot bod” things kinda tasteless…. if he wasnt that built you probably wouldnt have even mentioned the video… but luckily he is and your vanity had a good side to it by default
A little self-promoting, yes, but he posted other videos without showing his face to raise awareness of closeted LBGT people in the military. I think he’s trying to use social media to get other people in the military to come out and the things he asks for helps him do that.
Yeah a lot of soldiers have similar requests for American items on their pages. I don’t have a problem with his self promotion. If his openness can help another kid like little Jamey from killing themselves, it’s all worth it and I’m happy to send him a iPad…

That is indeed a sexy body but is it me or does it look like he’s in the same room as those two guys that were (poorly) lipsyncing to “Barbie world”? Is he one of them or are they in some sort of closeted gay barracks?
While I’m wholly in favor of muscular military guys showing off in the barracks AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE, I dunno how “brave” it is to come out to your pops 1)on the phone and 2) for every random nut on YouTube to follow along …and as DADT was finally put to bed. Coming out a year or two ago = a whole different story.
His video make me smile. Also, when he said he’s from Alabama, I thought his dad would go nuts but it was cool.

I read this story/saw the vid here yesterday. (And mentioned what a spunk he is!)
This morning it was on a TV breakfast show in Australia. The vile hosts gushed and oooh-ed at how brave and good he was..
Universal appeal, it seems. He certainly appeals to me..
I was surprised to hear he was from Alabama, same as me. But it was confirmed when his dad answered the phone and he said “Hi Deddy.” Not sure if it’s strictly an Alabama thing or not but we pronounce it DED-DEE. Just so ya know ; )
If it’s just self-promotion, then this is the kind of self-promotion I can get behind. His coming out to his dad, and his dad’s reaffirmation of his love and pride for his son can only help in the long run. His video has over 2 million views and has been featured on Good Morning America, Rachel Maddow and the Daily Show. Millions of people have been affected by it and it all seems to be positive. That he’s adorable and ripped just adds to the positive impression.
I was born and raised here in Alabama. We are not as back woods as some people may think. Haha. We are viewed as being extremely conservative and while many people here are, there are people here who hold on to religion and censervative views and accept us gay men and women. Maybe his dad’s reaction will be a good thing, not only for younger gays but also for fighting that stereotype. 🙂
