Gleek Out: Silly Love Songs

Watching Glee has become a chore for me. This has been going on for a while now, and you could probably sense it from reading our most recent Gleek Out entries. It drives me crazy to focus on the show’s musical numbers, because I’d literally rather castrate myself than listen to these watered-down renditions.

Obviously, many of you don’t feel the same way, and I feel guilty for dragging you down with my negativity. The fact of the matter? There are redeeming qualities to this show. Ashley Fink made me chuckle as the group’s newest member Lauren Zizes. There’s some great comic relief from Jane Lynch, Naya Rivera and Heather Morris. Then there’s Dot-Marie Jones as Coach Beiste, who has provided several tearjerking moments since her addition to the cast.

Not to mention, Max Adler is really fucking cute. I’m not even going to pretend that Chord Overstreet or Mark Salling put bigger boners in my pants. To each his own, but I’m lusting after the football player who actually looks like a football player.

Maybe I should get to the point? I’d like to make a proposal, minus the ring pops or mall-retail serenades. What if these “recaps” focused on five or ten things I liked about each episode, rather than my ranting about all the shitty stuff? Take a moment to think about it, and then cast a vote with your decision.

  1. I have hardly ever watched this show, but the musical numbers in this week’s show, particularly “Silly Love Songs,” were fabulous. The harmonies, singing, and vocal arrangement of that song were masterful. The plot lines are beyond cliche’, of course, and the “acting” is way over the top, but the whole thing is more in the vein of Broadway musical than serious drama, and it should be taken for what it is. This is really the first show of this type to “make it’ on network TV, so that alone is reason for praise.

  2. For some reason, I strangely enjoy your cynical, I’m a generation-past-who-this-show-applies-to commentary. Sometimes you remind me of my father commenting on how crappy today’s music is.

  3. DEWITT!! HOw the HELL could you miss a chance to mock Katy Perry?????? Lea Michele’s version of Firework is completely vocally superior to the original. Not to mention it fit completely within the context of the episode. Could have been your first 5 ever!

  4. Maybe in addition to ranting about what you didn’t like, you could ALSO post about the things you DID like….add a little something to the usual, which (so far) people seem to like.

  5. The problem is Dewitt, you like almost none of the music. Not anything. It is either the wrong song choice, badly performed, boring, not relevant and complaint after complaint. I love the posting of the songs and that is enough for me. Since you are not a professional theater critic I find most of your comments of little or no interest. If the point of this forum is to be bitchy then you have succeeded as well as many of your readers. It is one of the reasons why I rarely come here anymore. And I know a lot of the guys love the bitchiness but that is a reflection on them. Now I will be attacked because most posters here are downright nasty. But I won’t be back to read any comments so go at it boys.

My point is that there is too much negativeness here and your reviews of Glee contribute to it. I know Glee is not perfect. But nothing is.

  6. I’m surprised no one sang “Love Song” by Sara Bareilles…especially with the “strong single ladies”…ah well…another missed opportunity.

  7. Hey, I will gladly do the recap for you… Haha, if you would like to know my qualifications I am a musician who studied voice and am currently a music teacher. While my writing skills are not the best my ability to judge is pretty good… Although I love the show so it may get more positive reviews then what you give it… But there are some bad moments… like “Fireworks” that was not good singing right there… Anyway. I think SOMEONE should be writing the blog even if you don’t… the show is good, and even though you may not like it at times for the young guys out there finding their way gLee could be a really good outlet for them and… seeing the pictures of the guys makes my day more enjoyable!

  8. Why don’t you simply do a catch-all recap? Mention the things you liked, the things you disliked and a short line about whatever songs they covered?

  9. We are several episodes behind here in UK and had been getting bit tired of the show and the way the songs were more promos than fitting in with story and emotions as when it started – however the rocky horror episode from last week was pretty good and fun even with the word changes and this weeks actually had me rooting for Kurt and the story of his battle of being gay at school (and coachs story) made a far more powerful story than I was expecting – brought up some not so great memories of school as well but I did think that episode may help some guys (girls) understand that they are not the only ones who have felt they are battling alone.
