Gleek Out: Laryngitis

Glee, Laryngitis, Chris Colfer, Mike O'Malley, episode 18

Last night's episode of Glee found several of the characters in unusual situations. Kurt went butch! Puck went soft! And last but not least, Rachel loses her voice (hence the title of the episode). A few of the plotlines may have been ridiculous, but all was forgiven thanks to a few stellar musical numbers and LOL-worthy lines.

Was it the best episode we've seen yet? Not a chance, but it was thoroughly enjoyable for the most part. Honestly, we're still popping a boner over the promo for next week, which features Neil Patrick Harris as Schuester's arch nemesis. Ugh, next Tuesday can't come soon enough…

NEXT WEEK:

———————————————————————————

Jessie's Girl (Cory Monteith): Mr. Schuester encourages the students to sing songs that represent who they are as a person. Apparently, Finn's entire identity revolves around pining after Rachel, even though she still has feelings for former Vocal Adrenaline member Jesse St. James. You can probably guess why he's singing this Rick Springfield hit.

Now, the inclusion of this song was bound to happen sooner or later. It's somewhere between clever and all too obvious, yet leaning towards the latter. While Cory Monteith wasn't too shabby when it came to the vocals, his creepy stalker eyes were a total turn-off. Wouldn't it be great if they just wrote off his character and replaced him with someone who can actually sing? (2.5 Points)

———————————————————————————

Lady Is A Tramp (Mark Salling & Amber Riley): When a doctor shaves off his trademark mohawk, Puck loses his bad-ass mojo. To gain back his popularity, he opts to date the newest member of the cheerleading squad. Who just happens to be Mercedes.

While this plotline was a bit of a stretch, it's always a treat to hear Mark Salling's voice. Actually, it's pretty much a treat when Mark Salling does anything. This scene could have literally involved him picking lint off his sweater, and I'd still be drooling all over myself. More Puck? Yes, please! (3.5 Points)

———————————————————————————

The Boy Is Mine (Amber Riley & Naya Rivera): Mercedes begins "dating" Puck, despite Quinn's warnings about the wrath of Santana. This leads to a bit of the cat-fight between the two girls, and they take out their frustrations on one another with Brandy and Monica's number one pop hit.

Once again, this plotline is still kind of farfetched, but how fucking magical was this shit? I was writhing around in excitement as soon as they began the intro, and it only got better once they started singing. These two sounded fantastic together! And it's so nice to see Naya Rivera emerging from the background. (5 Points)

———————————————————————————

Rose's Turn (Chris Colfer): Kurt becomes jealous of his father's developing bromance with Finn, so he throws on some flannel, starts singing John Mellencamp and makes out with Brittany. When his desperate plea for attention doesn't work out in his favor, he lets out his frustrations on stage in the gayest way possible. And it's totally awesome.

Like, really awesome. I had chills throughout this entire musical number, which says a lot when you're following in the footsteps of Ethel Merman, Bernadette Peters, Bette Midler and Patti LuPone. It's a shame this one probably went right over most audience members' heads. (5 Points)

———————————————————————————

One (Lea Michele, Cory Monteith & Full Cast): To make her feel better about the prospect of losing her voice, Finn introduces Rachel to an old football buddy whose dreams were crushed by an injury. He reveals to her that he's into singing, so she visits him at his bedside and rocks out to this U2 jam.

It's a decent cover overall, but it doesn't go anywhere beyond decent. They really need to step it up with these grand finale moments, because numbers like this just seem entirely superfluous. Bring it harder, Glee-tards! (3 Points)

BREAKDOWN OF POINTS SYSTEM:

  • 5 Points = Excellent or exceeding expectations in regards to vocal performance, choreography and arrangement. Fits well within the context of the episode, and potentially better than the original version.
  • 4 Points = Not too shabby! May not be entirely on par with the original, but a fantastic effort by the actors and vocalists.
  • 3 Points = Tolerable. Did not induce eye rolls or kept them to a minimum.
  • 2 Points = Could be a variety of factors, including poor song choice or lackluster performance. Boring or uninspired. May be an insult to the original artist.
  • 1 Point = Absolutely painful. Couldn't wait for it to be over.

  1. this episode was pretty disappointing since rachel did a hell of a lot of talking for someone having laryngitis.

  2. Agreed with B: Lady is a Tramp was awesome.
Also agree with 5 for “Boy is Mine,” however, I was really disappointed with the way that Scheuster handled this…I mean, if the kids really DID look like they were going to kick the shit out of each other, he shouldn’t have been all flowers and rainbows and “ok, kids, let’s settle down now.”

  3. I loved Jesse’s Girl. It was hilarious and it worked so well with the situation. I also loved how much Rachel just destroyed “the climb” because she was losing her voice. It made my day a whole lot better.

  4. U2’s One, was the arrangement Mary J sang with them (and often without them, too). It was a great idea.

  5. Sorry, I fat fingered. Started to say that I thought the visit to the paraplegic was very touching and very wise of Finn. I agree it wasn’t the best episode but it was certainly enjoyable. Really Puck with Mercedes was a ridiculous stretch especially for Puck but they did make beautiful music together. And man can Mark sing. These kids are amazing.

  6. there are times lea michele sounds like dolly parton when she hits the higher notes.

  7. Alex S., I think that was purposeful. Laryngitis is the loss of the voice, which is what Schuester had complained that everyone in the Glee club had done: Kurt attempted to portray something he wasn’t to impress/be loved by his dad; Puck lost his hair/mojo; Mercedes realized that her attempt at being a Cheerio really wasn’t who she was. All of them had lost who they really were (their voice.) Therefore, even though Rachel had tonsillitis, the episode was aptly named Laryngitis.

  8. I bet they were thinking what song could we use for Rachel to mess up on ? And of course they chose a Miley Cyrus song. The sad thing is that’s how Miley sounds without auto-tune
I have disagree with the Boy Is Mine cover i thought it was bad,But Naya sounds just like Monica. It seems like they just left her voice in there. My favorite song of the night was Puck and Mercedes The Lady Is A Tramp i had to download that one.

  9. I hate the character of Finn so bad. It’s like they didn’t develop him as thoroughly as the other characters. Why do we have to endure him every week when there are so many characters that are more interesting that have just been shoved into the background? And what the hell is with Tina being relegated to backup dancer all the sudden?

  10. It was a really nice episode. But i think the situation of the butchery of Kurt could be more juicy or, how to say it? More verosimil that it was. And all his complex, ugh, drives me crazy! Just like his dad said, stop being a victim! But besides that, it was a very good episode.
Waaaaaaaaaay better than if it were a full-on-Britney one.. XD
PS: I was just thinkin about that the chinese guy hasn’t really show up as a character of Glee, like a filler one or sumthin. Wouldn’t be awesoe that at the contest, sumthin happens and and apparently New Directions is doomed, and the chinese guy saves the day with an improv?? Just a random tought…

  11. I like most of the episode and I’m not a huge Glee fan. Love anything with Mercedes in it; she seems the most realistic of all the characters.
And I cried when Kurt and his dad made up. Those two blew the scene out of the water.

  12. I’m not a fan of Kurt at all but he had the best song this week. “The Boy Is Mine” was terrible. I was so excited for Santana to sing but she didn’t sound as good as she did on “Like A Virgin.”
Rachel having tonsillitis was lame, she is the best singer on the show and should have at least one solo every episode and the final song this episode was lame. Also they really need to let Tina sing again.
And I’m completely not excited for Neil Patrick Harris. He’s so overrated and needs to stop playing macho straight men.

  13. I wet myself when Kurt started in with some Gypsy. I love everything about Glee, and most all of the music they do I think is fantastic – but I’m a theater queen at heart and throwing it back to Momma made the episode for me.
