Gleek Out: Comeback

How convenient! Shortly after the release of Justine Bieber‘s 3D “documentary” Never Say Never, the cast of Glee decided to take on two of the lesbian pop star’s musical numbers. But, you know, this show hasn’t become a slick marketing vehicle for the faultering music industry… Not at all.

All complaints aside, there were some especially fun moments in last night’s episode. The plot developments were a bit ridiculous, but we’re always a fan of diva-offs, Sue Sylvester and Chord Overstreet‘s dick-sucking lips. Overall, what did you think? Weigh in with your thoughts in the comments section.

FULL EPISODE:

___________________________________________________________

Baby (Chord Overstreet): When Sam started strumming his guitar, we almost thought to ourselves, “Hey, this is kind of good!” Then he went from precious to blatantly ridiculous in a matter of seconds. It would have been fun if they played up the comic value, but it would have been even better if they just kept this as a purely acoustic version. Blech. (2.5 Points)

Somebody To Love (Kevin McHale, Chord Overstreet, Mark Salling & Harry Shum Jr.): If we said we vaguely enjoyed this, does that mean we have the Bieber Fever? Not quite. There was something very novel about seeing this performed in true boy-band style. Plus, we support anything that involves Mike Chang. Those fucking abs! He should never be allowed to wear a shirt. (4 Points)

___________________________________________________________

Take Me Or Leave Me (Lea Michele & Amber Riley): How did the Rent-heads feel about this? We assume some of them were pissing their pants in excitement, while others were bashing their head in with the remote control. No one is more dedicated than Rent fans. No one!

Our feelings on this were pretty much summed up by the song’s title–take it or leave it. These two did a decent enough job for an “in the classroom” diva battle, but it didn’t really blow our socks off. Can we just bring back Kurt already and have a real diva competition? (3 Points)

___________________________________________________________

This Little Light of Mine (Matthew Morrison & Jane Lynch): This was so damn manipulative it wasn’t even funny. And we mean that quite literally. We got a little choked up, despite the fact that we knew exactly what the writers were doing. Whatever, dudes! We’re just glad they didn’t use Katy Perry’s “Firework” for this scene.

___________________________________________________________

I Know What Boys Like (Ashley Fink): For some reason, we expected Lauren Zizes to break out as this huge diva (pun sincerely not intended). Her vocals didn’t live up to our expectations, but she’s got so much attitude that you can’t help loving her. And the underwear-clad eye candy didn’t hurt either. (3.5 Points)

Sing (Full Cast): As a general fan of lumberjacks, we were automatically enamored by this number. Cory Monteith should wear flannel shirts forever. Seriously. And maybe he should grow a beard too. Oddly, we weren’t that offended by the group’s take on My Chemical Romance, mostly because the original source material is kind of “meh” anyways.

Now, can we talk about something interesting? Sue Sylvester’s plaid Adidas tracksuit was downright genius. We want to own it, so we can wear it to a local bear bar. Honestly, we’re giving this song a whole extra point, because that tracksuit is just so damn amazing. NEED IT. (4 Points)

BREAKDOWN OF POINTS SYSTEM:

  • 5 Points = Excellent or exceeding expectations in regards to vocal performance, choreography and arrangement. Fits well within the context of the episode, and potentially better than the original version.
  • 4 Points = Not too shabby! May not be entirely on par with the original, but a fantastic effort by the actors and vocalists.
  • 3 Points = Tolerable. Did not induce eye rolls or kept them to a minimum.
  • 2 Points = Could be a variety of factors, including poor song choice or lackluster performance. Boring or uninspired. May be an insult to the original artist.
  • 1 Point = Absolutely painful. Couldn’t wait for it to be over.

  1. Haha, I totally missed Sue’s outfit last night. That is totally her, I love it. Of course Puck in his underwear and Sam shirtless also doesn’t hurt anything.

  2. You missed giving points to “This little light of mine”! I thought it was great, but your comments on it leave me wondering whether or not you rated it a 1 or a 5.

  3. I thought last night was a return to the genius that makes (or, made) Glee great. The musical numbers were spot-on, performed well, closely related to the plot and genuine reimaginings of the original material. The story itself had emotional highs and lows, the character-lines moved forward in interesting ways, and the characters we love–Sue, Brittany and Lauren–were given great material. This was a genuine renaissance moment for a show that has been faltering in serious ways.

  4. Love glee last nights episode was great I must be coming down with bieber fever because when the guys sang those bieber songs they were hot

glee guys + bieber songs = super sexy

  5. If we must have an episode without Kurt and Blaine, at least we got Puck in his underwear! 😉

By far, Glee is still the BEST show on TV!

  6. lol u havent u ever thought that justin b kind of looks like a lesbian? i have heard this joke so many times

  7. I actually loved the Diva-off and liked seeing the show get back a little closer to their original formula. The bieber stuff i could have done without but at least it gave Sam a little bit of personality. They are really turning Quinn into a soul-sucking bitch after they spent so much time redeeming her character through the pregnancy…Anyway- this episode was a season highlight

  8. Well I haven’t seen it yet but if they’re all prancing around in their underwear, I like it already. I’ll be sure to bring my lube to the viewing.

  9. I HAVE that Power Rangers shirt…o.o

and I didn’t notice Sue in that dominatrix outfit during the show! I was too busy trying to find Kevin McHale I guess…hilarious. I love Sue.

The songs and episode itself was…eh for me.

  10. first of all you should all jsut learn to embrace the bieber, I used to hate him but realized he’s actually talented and had to work to get where he is, and the fact you rated the song sing a 4 is beyond me they did a far superior job than my chemical romance ever could
