Washington Legalizes Marriage Equality

Marriage equality has been legalized in Washington! This occurred a day after Prop 8 was kicked in the nuts in California. Huzzah!

Washington is the 7th state to get a clue. We still have far to go in our fight for equal rights, but does anyone else notice a wall starting to crumble? When will it become floodgates opening?

Governor Christine Gregoire:

With today’s vote, we tell the nation that Washington state will no longer deny our citizens the opportunity to marry the person they love. We tell every child of same-sex couples that their family is every bit as equal and important as all other families in our state. And we take a major step toward completing a long and important journey to end discrimination based on sexual orientation.

I want to be the first gay married at that fish market thingy in Seattle. With my luck, I would get slapped in the face by a flying tuna and my blue seersucker wedding suit would get all fucked up.

p.s. I thought Portland was in Washington. I’m going to kill myself now. Public schools? :/

  1. While Portland might be in Oregon, it’s always trying to be as good as Seattle.

(I am in no way biased by the fact that I have a view of the Space Needle from my backyard… not at all!)

  2. Yeah, I know. Look at my p.s. This is the worst thing to happen to me all week. Fuck. Being revealed as a moron is painful.

  3. You northern states should consider yourselves lucky. It’s going to be a long, long time before gay marriage is legalized in the south. It may never happen!

  4. Yea!  I knew there was a reason that I moved here from the east coast!!  But then, NY is on the ball as well…  What we need is marriage equality on the Federal level so this piecemeal nonsense can be done with, once and for all.  But these are steps on the way to that.

On a related note- Jeff and I went to a gay “social” potluck last weekend.  The host had a roommate wh0 was holding a Log Cabin Republican social and fund raiser in the same house, on the same night.  They decided to combine the two socials. Big Duh.

The Log Cabin Republicans (also known as the gay-self-haters with zero self respect) had a WA State Senator there- Michael Baumgartner- and this genius had the balls to tell us that he voted against the Equality bill but wanted to know how we felt about that.  And would we please support him and give him some money?

After a few choice exchanges, we left.  The stunning thing was the fact of so many gays there who were clueless.  And the best part was the political wanna-be’s who were running around in suits and ties, trying to collect bucks for this idiot. Total butt kissers, and not in a good way.

  5. Well, you got the Pike Place Market reference right–that IS in Washington.  So you get half a point.

Damn pubbie! (Tommy’s prep school friends’ term for public school students.  See also: dog walker, shoe shiner, and roadside trash picker-upper.)

    KIDDING!!  Love you! *muah*

  6. i agree brian i’m in oklahoma so where ever you are it maybe there before it is here fucking bible belt state

No, Prop 8 was not kicked in the nuts – kicked in the nuts would mean the Supreme Court upholds the decision (and it would mean other judges who are not as far left as Stephen Reinhardt uphold it too). This won’t happen – the reality is voters will vote for gay marriage this November, given 1) the polls show gay marriage is in the majority and b) the reason they voted Prop 8 had nothing to do with gay marriage, but the WAY gay marriage was introduced i.e. via judicial fiat. I for one don’t think gays are tepid, stupid, hopeless, weak and so unpopular and UNCOOL we need judicial intervention to help our cause.  Nor do I support “if it feels good” evaluations in judicial rulings

This litigation is a total waste of money, better spent trying to persuade 2.6% of the population – mostly blacks btw – to change their mind. Talk to one another. Stop suing one another. Netherlands, a diverse, somewhat mildly religious yet liberal society was the first place to introduce gay marriage. It has no judicial review whatsoever (yes, I support abolishing judicial review – I believe we should all do it like the suffragists, or civil rights activists who took to the streets and campaigned – Brown never helped gays – the US is still deeply segregated).

As for those in the deep south, we have this thing called ‘federalism’ – vote with your feet. If gay marriage matters  so much to you (it may or may not), then move up north (several states too choose from now!). I suspect California to legalize it this year (2012), Maine (2012) or Colorado (2014).

Personally, I’d support an amendment to the Californian constitution which simply says regions/districts which vote No to a nationwide initiative should not be bound by the result. That way San Fran could issue as many licenses as it wants. That way we can empirically measure which lifestyle choices lead to better outcomes, possibly vetoing stereotypes in the process.

  8. As a person who grew up around Portland, moved to Seattle, and now moved back to Portland… I can say I hope Portland stays like Portland… funky, fun, down to earth, and real.  🙂  Seattle is fun to visit… just not to live.
