Gay Marriage Opponent’s Greatest Hits

It's no surprise that gay-marriage has seen a revival of news coverage in the last two months. With Iowa, Vermont, Maine legalizing it and New Hampshire and New York on the verge of doing the same, Media Matters has put together a medley of the greatest anti gay-marriage hits.

I'm all for free speech and opinions vary on gay-marriage, even in the gay community, but you should at least have a reasonable argument (and bestiality comparisons is by no means reasonable).

Does this make your blood boil or are you over the whole marriage debate?

  1. The argument has been made by many that gay marriage debates will eventually go the way interracial marriage debates went decades ago; i.e. the vocal opponents will gradually diminish in size as more Americans come to terms with the need for equality, until it becomes mainstream to accept gay marriage. While I’m not sure such a comparison is completely accurate, I see the gist of it as very similar…discrimination, ‘seprate but equal’ (not true!), adoption/visitation issues, etc. However- we are not yet at the point where rejection of gay marriage is considered complete out-and-out discrimination by mainstream society, like the prejudices of the civil rights era in the 1960s.
I applaud the open-minded young (and some old!) law-makers and spokespeople of our nation in both parties for edging us closer to this monumental equality. I’m especially thankful for keen observers and intelligent speakers like Meghan McCain, Ellen DeGeneres, Governor Paterson, the HRC, and many local officials across the country. I’m thrilled to see more people taking a stand for what THEY believe in, not what their party tells them to believe.
Gay marriage will happen in our lifetime, it just might be a bumpy – and exciting – road to get there in the coming years. I look forward to the secondary effects of such a paradigm shift, including the hope for more acceptance and tolerance for one another as HUMANS in coming generations. As a young teacher, I already see acceptance of GLBT students in the secondary school environment…it’s ‘no big deal’ for most kids. That is amazing to me, considering barely fifteen years ago when I was in high school it would have been a much different scenario. Let’s make it ‘no big deal’ for America! Gay couples deserve all the happiness and trials/tribulations of marriage like everyone else!!
To the brave and forward-thinking leaders in Iowa, California, Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Vermont – and to those speaking up in other states – bravo. You are truly admirable pioneers standing up for equality and justice.

  2. I find it hilarious that when arguing against same sex marriage people always instantly jump to the conclusion that it will shatter the bedrock of society.
“If the gays can marry then they’ll want to marry animals or children!”
I feel if your going to make an argument like that then you are obviously out of touch with any kind of sexual legislation in any country. An animal and a child cannot consent in any informed way therefore it is illegal and wrong to engage in any sexual act with them (aside from the fact that its disgusting). Aside from that, where is there any legitimate proof that queers are the ones who engage in these sexual acts? I don’t know about America, but here in Australia there has been a study which show that 90% of all pedophiles are heterosexual.
These people are just stupid and deserve to be slapped on public TV!

  3. When I see arguments like that I just stop and pray that God will unburden them of their ignorance and open their hearts to love, peace, understanding, and tolerance. I ask that God blesses them with knowledge and helps them see the fact that only God is the one allowed to judge – no matter what the sin.

  4. Its just ludicrous that a portion of the population has to wait for small minded people to reach enlightenment. That’s bullshit. All Americans should have the right to marry. Let the right wing come around in their own time — somewhere other than in my face!

  5. The tendency for the right wing to immediately take ANY departure from what they deem to be “moral” and “traditional” and extrapolate it to such extreme possibilities makes me so mad at times I think I’m going to literally explode.
Others here have already made the more than valid arguments of “consenting adults” and “separate but equal” against the right wingnuts’ attacks, but there are times when I wish we had more visceral means of restribution against such blatant hate.
I’m not advocating open acts of violence against the right wingnuts, but unlike Roger/UNIXBOYMD, when I pray I ask God to cure their ignorance and hatred, or at least given them flaming anal boils.
