On today’s post about Olympian gymnast Ji Wallace, who recently came out as HIV positive, there was some controversy in the comments section about Wallace “flaunting his sexuality“. I was quick to call bullshit on this sentiment. People living with HIV have every right to look, feel and be sexy. It’s preposterous and close-minded to suggest otherwise.

To further prove my point, I thought I’d share some pics of swimmer, model, fashion designer and overall HIV-positive role model Jack Mackenroth. He showed off his big, round rump in a new photo shoot with Justin Monroe, and I’m loving every single shot in the set! Don’t you just want to reach out and smack that ass?

    I hope it’s OK to put In a little plug for Jack’s latest and purposeful venture, namely the recent launch of a networking site that’s specifically for poz guys. Its aims are to help them find and support one another, to provide health advice and promote healthy living in the poz community, and to combat the stigma surrounding HIV. So there’s a lot more to Jack than what meets the eye–appealing as that part is too.

  119. Oh please! No one is saying people with HIV can’t be sexy. What critics were saying is that lionizing being HIV positive is NOT acceptable. The idea that being HIV positive is sexy and labeling people under the trendy grouping “poz”–as if to make it sound cool and appealing–is really a sickening thought. In all honesty, it is this transgression that most makes me want to distance myself from certain people within this community. There is a huge difference between saying people with HIV can be sexy and saying HIV is sexy–the latter unfortunately seems to be the prominent sentiment among top posters and is a horrible thing to say and imply. May I remind you all that HIV in NOT sexy. Watching your health slowly deteriorate while every facet of your immune system painfully begins to fail you because some insatiable virus is replicating IT’S DNA INTO YOURS is the reality of this disease, and it should NEVER EVER be masqueraded as sexy. This distinction is very much needed on this thread. People who think being positive is sexy are advancing complacency with HIV. Complacency with HIV is like complacency with failure–any potential advancements in treating the disease diminish substantially. A lot of you people need to wake the hell up!

  120. Am HIV- and have dated and been in a relationship with an HIV+ man. he was honest about his status from the start, which made me more attractive to him. The one thing that broke us up was the fact he cheated on me. It was a deal breaker for me and can handle being with a HIV+ man, but not one that wants an open relationship.
