Elli Ingram: “Poetic Justice” (Kendrick Lamar Cover)

I’m fighting so hard to not compare Elli Ingram to fellow Brit-pop-soul singer Adele. I mean, it always drives me crazy when judges on reality TV shows like The Voice or American Idol look at a girl who isn’t a size zero and spurt out, “Wow, you’ve got a little bit of an Adele thing going on”… Because nine times out of ten? These women sound absolutely nothing like Adele.

But here’s the thing! Elli Ingram sounds like Adele. A lot.

Mind you, I wouldn’t have ever dared make that comparison until I heard her two piano-driven original tracks “Intoxicated” and “Silver & Gold“. Both sound like they could very well be official B-sides to “Someone Like You“—and please don’t crucify me for saying this—but I might actually enjoy these two tunes more than 90% of Adele’s repertoire.

Today, however, we’re here to talk about Ingram’s cover of Kendrick Lamar‘s “Poetic Justice“. While you might be skeptical of a blond-haired white girl tackling a track from one of 2012’s best hip-hop albums, trust me when I say that she manages to pull this one off, right down to the sultry Janet JacksonAny Time, Any Place” sample.

And just to justify those Adele comparison’s, here’s a live clip of “Intoxicated”:

  1. The thing I always wonder is if Brit singers like Adele really sing in their natural voice or are they imitations of another era.
