Drawn To You: Michael Breyette

In some cases, Michael Breyette‘s paintings are better than porn. The majority of his pieces thrive on what you don’t see, allowing the audience to fill in the blanks and tell the story for themselves. A simple naked pillow fight could lead to an all-night fucking session with multiple loads blown. A nearly-naked cowboy looking out the window could be waiting for his lover to come ride his cock. The possibilities are (usually) endless.

More importantly, the paintings are also really good. While they don’t delve into photorealistic territory, they’re real enough to make us wish the subjects were actual living, breathing human beings. Sure, Breyette appears to be married to a specific, idealistic muscular body type, but his impressive attention to detail (body hair, tan lines, etc.) makes each guy feel like an individual.

Check out a few selected pieces below, and you’ll see what we mean.

  1. These are amazing. I love art like this, almost more than photography. It takes real dedication and talent to produce images like this.

  2. I bought a Michael Breyette print while in Ptown years ago and it just captivated me when I saw it, such a sense of emotion comes through it

  3. This is incredible. Every detail, shade, and ass hair. If this were in motion, I’d jerk off to it.

  4. this man’s work is truly beautiful. they’re stunning. i wouldn’t want to have to choose a favorite but strictly based my first viewing alone, the 2 military guys riding in the back of the cargo truck hit me as being so gentle and so intense at the same time. its just so sexy.
    bravo, michael!

  5. agree completely — this is the best type of gay art — it’s very realistic with an astounding attention to detail — — one aspect i particularly like is that the cocks are realistically sized; it’s a turn off when the proportions are just unreal and too cartoonish (i.e., most of Class Comics (not that I don’t still love CC…))

  6. Im sorry, the drawings may be beautiful but the style its in is just incredibly terrible. Its soo plastic looking, and not really real at all. None of these say anything, have no concept, and are just typical gay fantasies drawn out visually. There are ways of being blatantly erotic with art, but this is just verging on silly. If he was more sophisticated in his technique and maybe apply some sort of concept, then it would be provacative, bold, and have some sort of relevant meaning and commentary.

  7. All my work is available on my website http://www.breyette.com. Lyman-Eyer Gallery in Provincetown MA and Gallery XO in Wilton Manors FL also represent me. If you happen to live or visit those areas you can check out some originals in person as well as prints.

  8. I’m giving one of Michael’s pieces to my husband as a wedding gift….his portrayal of gay marriage is exceptional, proving not only can he draw the hot hunky naked studs, but also fully clothed real men with the same sexy approach. I think he’s brilliant.

  9. So I can cross you off my Christmas list? 🙂 No, no they aren’t real. They are fantasy. Thanks for the input, but I’m well aware that some people will look at my work and only see sexy men, which is fine by me. Sexy men are great! While part of my artistic motivation is to celebrate the male form and give the often maligned male nude (compared to female) representation in art, my figures also act as my messengers of emotions and thoughts I am feeling. Perhaps my commentary is too subtle for some tastes, but I don’t like being bold when it comes to ‘instructing people what to think’ when they look at a piece of my art. While the article presented a selection of my works that are more ‘flesh’ oriented, even these were motivated by thoughts other than ‘hot guys.’ The above pieces were inspired by various things such as longing for an absent lover, the repeal of DADT, the economic collapse of 2008 by Wall St., going off the grid, neighborhoods banning clotheslines etc. I like to have fun with my works, throwing in a little sex, whimsy, joy romance, whatever *I* am feeling. I don’t create for the viewer, I create for myself. Oh, and If my pastel chalks on paper that I blend with my fingers looks smooth and shiny like plastic…I’ll take that as a compliment. 🙂

  10. Thanks so much! The piece is titled “Love & War”. The repeal of DADT made me contemplate the freedom to express love in the midst of war.

  11. As the owner of his work “Natural Wonder”, I can without reserve say your comments reflect the lack of study you’ve done on his portfolio. While Michael has done some works that are blatantly sexual [ok, quite a few 😉 ], i would say that he always finds a way in his works to convey thoughts, ideas, messages, and/or emotions that elicit different responses in his audience depending on their background and life experiences.

Sorry Michael, definitely couldn’t let this one go by.
