Drawn To You: Go Hirano

It’s easy to take for granted some of the amazing liberties that just simple access to the internet affords us in 2015. If you want to draw some dicks going into butts (or wherever) you can just open up a Deviant Art account and share them with the entire world. It wasn’t always like this though, and gay erotic art has had a much more mysterious and often underground life than straight or heteronormative erotic art has faced. On this, the day that the penultimate erotic art publication of the western world has decided “NO MORE NUDES!” I thought we should celebrate one of the greatest gay artists of the last hundred years or so – Go Hirano.

Hirano, the man, remains quite a mystery, even to this day. He made hundreds and hundreds of drawings of men locked in passionate embraces, and had a particular ability to capture the wincing, intense, consuming, ultra-sharp moments of intercourse and stimulation, but submitted them by mail to the gay publication Barazoku, and never once appeared in person.  His name is associated with graphic illustrations starting around 1963, though viewers are most familiar with his later works published exclusively in Barazoku in great quantity.  If you don’t know about Barazoku, this article is a great start to a wikipedia wormhole about homosexuality in Japanese culture.

It’s hard to imagine someone working this way in 2015 – taking great and painstaking care in crafting these – mostly pencil on paper – drawings, and then refusing to own credit for their beauty. Twitter is ablaze with people taking credit for and bemoaning plagiarism of 140 character jokes, but the hours, months, years that this man spent illustrating the glorious beauty of mansex, are just sort of left to the wind. It’s kind of incredible really.

The drawings done by Hirano abide almost entirely by the regulations of Japanese pornography, so it is exceptionally rare to see an unobscured penis in his work.  The laws prevent the clear display of genitals, but somehow, obscuring those genitals with full-on penetration is A-OK! So there’s lots of Hirano’s drawings that are impossibly graphic, but which don’t actually show the head of a penis. Sometimes just a loose tissue is used to obscure the glans from view.

Here’s a collection of some of my very favorite Hirano drawings, featuring his signature vinegar strokes faces:

Here, the subject clearly has a raging hard on, but due to porn regulations, the head and shaft are hidden by some very thin shorts. If you’re into feet, too Hirano does some gorgeous socked foot detail.

Again, even though you can clearly SEE this guy has a big leaky boner, it’s technically disguised by those tight, sheer panties the dude has on.

A great example of using actual penetration to disguise the bulk of the shaft and hide the penis head. Love that bottom’s face here too. I know that feel.

The guy knew how to draw fur, that’s for sure.

The tanline on this guy’s ass is fucking amazing. This is a few pixels away from just being a photograph, there’s so much detail.

Go Hirano

Totally dying to watch this guy soak that thin cloth with all the cum he’s about to unload. Woof. That toe detail on his socked foot is so meticulous.

As a lover of big hairy balls, this is easily one of my most favorite pics. You can just feel what this dude is feeling while he pushes that ass out and sucks his thumb in anticipation. Totally hot af.

If you have favorite Hirano illustrations, post or link em in the comments. I can’t get enough of these sexy Japanese dudes splayed out and fucking hard.

  1. Thanks for sharing, Tyler! I love his work! Actually I would rather it remains a mystery, it adds mystics to the legend he (or she!) is!

  2. I know what you mean, but I hope he (she?!) didn’t pass away without knowing the joy that this work brought. That’s my only thing. That the artist knows this work mattered.
