Drawn To You: Andrew Kolb

There’s more to gay culture than Lady Gaga. Quite frankly, we should probably be writing about other stuff. But, um, before we do that… Can we please take a moment and stare at Andrew Kolb‘s fantastic illustrations of “Telephone”?

Kolb transforms the premise of the song into a country club adventure, complete with a snooty butler and a psychedelic breakdown. The faded pages and minimum use of color are reminiscent of an old book, while the text confirms something we never fully realized–the lyrics to “Telephone” are entirely idiotic.

  1. “…while the text confirms something we never fully realized–the lyrics to “Telephone” are entirely idiotic.”

Aren’t all of the lyrics to Lady Gaga’s songs idiotic?

  2. Yeah these lyrics are entirely “idiotic”, ESPECIALLY if you’ve never experienced a time where it seemed like your phone would never stop ringing when you’re just trying to relax and enjoy yourself and if you’ve never had a moment where you just turned off your cell, or unplugged your home phone (for some of the more experienced gents)just to get away from the rest of the world. Oh, and I’m sure these lyrics would just be wicked “idiotic” if you’re the type who just don’t get a hint and continuously calls or annoys the hell out of the one who’s obviously not interested in you…
hmmmm…well…since I’m not in either of those categories, I must say…these lyrics are pretty awesome, but I’m a guy who enjoys poetry of all kinds…

  3. “Idiotic” is completely subjective, and not every song needs to have some special meaning. Sometimes a nonsensical song is completely fine. “Nonsensical” works of art have always existed–don’t tell me you never read Dr. Seuss–and part of what makes a song like “Telephone” is its beat, rhyme, alliteration, and other poetic traits. I enjoy “meaningful” songs as well, but I’m not going to knock a song just because it’s by Lady Gaga/”idiotic”. Though I’m faithfully a member of Team Britney.

  4. Sifime – amazing use of colour? One colou. Font – what is amazing about this font.. very suss comment.

And the song does make sense. In prose it could hve been done in one sentence – but it’s a pop song.. what can you expect? Does Anyone know the meaning of ‘American Pie’?

  5. Do not get me wrong, I am a Gaga fan, but I’m also an English student. Please do not make her work out to be something poetic. It’s not full of alliteration. Sure, it’s got a bit of internal rhyme, it’s got a hell of a lot of repetition. But repetition of the word “eh” and rhyming “see” and “busy” does not make it a work of beautiful art. Fun song? Sure. Artful? No. Idiotic? Likely.

For an example of alliteration, please see Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven.” Perhaps that will help you in the future.

  6. How about Bob Dylan? What does he count as? To me, he’s just irritatingly non-sensical and annoying.

  7. If you don’t understand the lyrics, then you haven’t had the situation happen to you. Having a bf that doesn’t go out but then won’t leave you alone is a real pain. You just go ahead and dump them, of course, but in that moment it is a pain.
