Discuss: Family Guy’s Trans Episode

Familyguytrans2

Family Guy isn't exactly known for being politically correct, but last night's episode has been receiving some criticism for a handful of "homophobic and transphobic" language. In the episode, Quagmire's father reveals that he's transgender and plans on having a sex change while visiting Quahog.

Later on, Brian Griffin meets a woman named Ida at a hotel and proceeds to have sex with her. This woman happens to be Quagmire's father, who has recently completed her transition. Once Brian becomes aware of this fact, he vomits all over the floor and makes several insensitive remarks.

Some fans have urged any offended individuals to "lighten up",noting the show's tendency to make fun of… well, everything. But will there ever be a point when that defense doesn't hold up? What do you think–did last night's episode take it too far? Or are people getting upset about nothing?

  1. i didn’t think it was that bad. they do make fun of everything. and also in the episode they showed u could be a war hero and gay.

  2. i have not watched the episode but transgender men and women have a much farther road to travel than homosexuals. i am a gay male and have surrounded myself in “open minded” people. yet even the most “open minded” of these people have made comments that are just beyond shocking about transgender. one of them allowed himself to be educated while the others, well i hope they are enjoying their life somewhere else.

  3. The team at “Family Guy” got what they wanted … people talking about the show.

  4. Why is it that gay people want tolerance and acceptance and yet make fun of each and everyone but freak out when a TV (!) show makes fun of them…???
Man up, and take it like a man!
It’s a TV show, for crying out loud and not the Today Show

  5. People need to get over it. the creators of family guy make fun of everyone…literally from whites to asian, to straights and asexuals. come on its a cartoon and to me this show was f’ing hilarious.

  6. Family Guy has a nasty habbit of making humerous situations out of some of the most unfunny situations. Case in point, the scene about the babies often left in dupsters due to underage pregnancy (nicknamed Prom Night Dumpster Baby). Honestly, I say we should just laugh at the irony of the situation, and move on, because while Family Guy JUST did this, South Park made a reference to it LONG ago (Ms. Garrison) and unlike Family Guy, South Park was actually aiming to piss people off.

  7. I think part of the problem is that gay activists seem to have their priorities fucked up. In my state, back in 2004, an amendment banning same-sex marriage was passed, and gay activists were nowhere to be found. But Heaven forbid that The Simpsons or Family Guy make a gay joke, or a Snickers commercial has two guys kissing and then pulling away. THAT’S completely unacceptable. And yes, before it gets said, I’m pretty fucking bitter about a gay joke on a cartoon getting more press than the stripping-away of my rights.

  8. agree 100 percent with haha, its cheapening the gay movement when activists make it more about adam lambert’s rights to give a blowjob than about actual rights being stripped away from people

  9. You know, I thought the episode was a really smart and thoughtful commentary on the transsexual experience. I’m disappointed some activists are taking those comments as being hateful when I believed them to be realistic in today’s society. It was not meant to offend, I think this episode more than any I’ve seen before was meant to inform and promote tolerance.

  10. I find that most of the more recent Family Guy episodes are just tasteless and I watch them to see if I actually will get a laugh–I haven’t watched this one yet, but I will (in the hopes that it will end up being much better than last week’s “Trapped in a small space” episode wherein Stewie’s earlobe gets torn).

  11. oh your many heathan gods!!!!
Dude… Tooo funny…. hey, i fucked your dad…. too priceless!!!

  12. if it were smarter then maybe it would have been offensive… it just seemed kind of stupid and ameteur-hour…
in this country hate speech is everywhere. you can’t watch a sitcom w/o seeing someone making a stupid racist/sexist/homophobic comment and it’s really pathetic. it’s like musicians who just rely on sex to sell records, like seriously you can’t come up with anything more creative than that?
we’re all different, and honestly those differences are quite funny sometimes (stewie’s “casserole joke” at 17:28 was hilarious).
but when you just focus on that you’re doing your viewers a great disservice.

  13. Seth McFarlane has publicly said he’s pro-gay rights even though he himself is straight (unfortunately). I thought the episode wasn’t offensive toward transgendered people, because the most normal person in the episode was the transgendered dad! I thought the show made everyone else look foolish.

  14. To paraphrase the saying “it may not be art, but I know what I like”, I don’t have to watch cruel and tasteless crap to know that it’s crap. Never watched it, never will.

  15. I agree with Ari and Jared–it was a well-done episode for the most part. I really do think it jumped off the peak towards the end and overall lost its status as a potentially “great episode” as a result, but it’s interesting to see how well he treated the transgendered Dan Quagmire when he’s made most of his gay characters abhorrent, at least in the Family Guy series.
This is totally the one highlight of a really bad season so far and makes me think that maybe Seth MacFarlane isn’t quite as much of a douche as he always seems to be. As physically attractive as he is, I find him to be a horribly vile person in his antagonization of anyone who does not share his views. But the episode is great–if you ignore the last two, three, maybe four or five minutes.

  16. I personally didn’t find it that offensive. I mean yes, they made fun of the gay and tras community, but this isn’t the 1st time this has happened in this show. You’d think most people would expect this from family guy by now. I would think that if South Park did something like this, most people wouldn’t bat an eye, because that’s what we expect from them. I think that at the end of the episode, it did send a good message, that even though there are people in the world who are indeed gay, bi, lesbian or transgender, and that they could be anyone, even your dad, and all you need to do is accept them, because they haven’t changed as a person, and that’s the thing people need to remmeber above all else.

  17. I did not bother reading anyone comment. I think it was one of the best episodes yet. I could not stop laughing. Who cares abut them being politically correct. FAMILY GUY IS THE BEST CARTOON EVER.

  18. Hello Gay activist” Brian ( the dog ) had sex with a transgender female & than got his ASS kicked by Ida ( the transgender ) son . If any group should be upset it’s the Animal rights activist !!!
