DaQuan: “Where Did You Go?”

Where Did You Go?

DaQuan is the other half of Philly-based hip-hop duo Sgt. Sass. The pair stormed onto the scene around 2007 with their blog hits “Faggot Snappin'” and the Salt-n-Pepa referencing “I’ll Take Your Man”, following those tracks with three consistently excellent mixtapes—ART FGGT/FGGT ART, Body Rock & Double S 4 Mayor.

(Not to mention, the equally excellent buzz tracks “White Boys” and “Fags In Space”, the latter of which I am definitely not rapping on the fourth verse!)

Of course, now that I’ve offered up this splendid recap, you should throw everything you know (or just learned) out of the window! DaQuan branched out last year with a solo project The W.A.R.: Warrior Art Rebel, which dabbled in much darker territory than his work with Sgt. Sass. See “Psycho Sideshow”, “Krazy” and “Bird Shit” for reference.

For his latest project, he’s taken an even more dramatic turn, all but dropping his “fag rap” foundation for a ten-song collection of genre-fucking compositions. The first single “Where Did You Go?” kicks off with beat-boxing, immediately leads into a layered Muppet-like chorus, trails on to some catchy verses and eventually leads to… An operatic breakdown? It shouldn’t work, but it does! And it gets stuck in your head. Like a motherfucker. Seriously.

Additional tracks “Party Starter” and “Metronome” can be heard online, but you’ll have to wait awhile to hear the full album (unless you can make it to Philly for this party on October 25). Until then, why don’t you go grab a download of “Where Did You Go?” and listen to it on repeat. That’s what I’ll be doing for the next few weeks.
