Bret Easton Ellis Is Tiresome

An audio recording of (ironic, ain’t it?) Valtrex-user Paris Hilton noting to a friend (a GAY friend all of her defenders keep stating as if this made it OK) that she feels gays using apps to hook up is “disgusting” and that we all have AIDS surfaced last week. She’s brainless and terrible (she’s also been caught making racist comments about black people in the past) but it still irritated me when some of my friends and accquaintances were like “you talk shit to your friends, too, and probably say worse things. Plus, it’s Paris Hilton – who cares what she thinks?”

I’ll admit, there’s a point there. It’s just the fact that she said that shit and she’s a public figure who is probably aware that her every move (still, even after she’s long since been eclipsed by former friend Kim Kardashian’s large buttocks) and utterance could possibly wind up on TV, on websites, etc. And it’s an insulting opinion. Because it’s Paris, I ignored it and merely threw up her statement on our Facebook page and let our followers hash it out. But then Bret Easton Ellis opened his yap on Twitter. Again. He defended her.

I was doubly annoyed by that because –

A) He’s a gay man, a public figure and agreeing with her deficient self makes his community look bad . It feels traitor-y. And he’s wrong. Frankly, I’ve used the product I work for, I’m disease-free and I don’t consider myself “disgusting.” And I’m going to hazard a guess that I’m not the only one?

B) He’s kind of fallen off since American Psycho.  And he seems to use Twitter to make self-hating, anti-gay statements to get attention and bolster his fading literary career.

Which is probably what she was doing. Shit, for all we know – she e-mailed the recording to that cab driver and slipped him a $100. I’m holding him to a higher standard here, though, seeing as he’s an educated writer and openly gay.

What do you think?

  1. I suppose everyone is entitled to their opinion here in the good ol’ US of A, but that doesn’t mean we all have to agree with them – especially when they are public personas whose views can influence others and spread ignorance. So they should both be called to answer/defend their views. Then they should both return to being ignored by society unless they have something meaningful to contribute. (Unlikely for PH at least….)

  2. Brett is a hypocrite..he used Grindr in the past but is now bashing people who use it. Paris Hilton is a lost cause, no need to acknowledge anything that comes out of her mouth…

  3. Must one be “disease-free” to not be “disgusting”? Think it’s interesting that (negative?) gay men still feel the need to defend that one…defending it is giving it some place at the table. Even HIV+ men aren’t “disgusting,” shocking I know…

  4. Brett should be focusing on what’s left of his career instead of celebrity gossip. Seriously, has dude written anything successful since American Psycho?

  5. Who are these people? I mean it, seriously! WHO are they? Who cares? I mean that even more seriously – WHO CARES? When we give value to people’s negative behaviour – it’s feeding something negative. I pity them both, I have compassion for their ignorance – and we now see the value how the high and mighty fall yet again. It’s important not to feed into this with a negative reaction. It goes nowhere. Rise up, singing! GREAT OLD DISCO SONG!

  6. He’s a gay man, a public figure and agreeing with her deficient self makes his community look bad . It feels traitor-y. ” Do you guys have ANY idea how cultish you sound? Jim Jones would be proud. Bret ‘s a writer–his responsibility is to poke at the flaws in our society, not to make the community look good.” You can’t discredit him as a hypocrite because he’s admitted to using the damn app. You can’t discredit him solely on the fact that his latest work hasn’t been popular. The truth is, some of his work has helped the community. He’s commented on the fluid nature of sexuality as well as the vapid and neurotic tendencies of our youth. He’s shown that we can be just as flawed as the breeders. I’m not saying that as a die hard Ellis fan but as someone who has actually read his work.
Besides, I can’t imagine the community’s reaction to their statements appears not unlike a certain sci-fi religion’s PR. It’d be better if we didn’t seem hellbent on crushing anyone who makes us look anything shorter than hetero-friendly.

Imagine the reaction if Glee’s Kurt used Grindr. Paris’ reaction is not so illegitimate though she framed it awfully (I mean she’s been 16 for most of her unnatural life. Of course she exaggerates everything!) Take a long hard look at Grindr if I may pun there: it shows the closest guys that you could presumably hook up with. While you can just chat with them, the format of the app veers one’s thoughts toward sex. While our culture has a legitimate history in anon sex to avoid persecution, the app DOES take anon sex to creepy new heights, and anyone not used to this environment would OF COURSE be disturbed and/or disgusted. Our reaction should have been to point out a hetero-equivalent to Grindr though one escapes me at the moment.

  13. I like Bret Easton Ellis’ and his crazy ass tweets … from a society that hangs on every “DRAMA” in every reality tv series … are you really surprised that some jackass says some bonehead thing to get some much needed attention (could apply to either paris or bret here) …
why would bret be URGED to say something with rainbows and happy go lucky homos ? are you familiar with his work? not the most upbeat jazz hands there … but i have to admit …i love his rants about H.I.Glee … (you have to admit that’s some witty shit right there…)

  17. I find this article kinda bitchy & annoying.

    a) is there really anything wrong with a gay man disliking the sleazy hookup nature of grindr? I mean seriously, you talk about him making his community look bad…what about all of the ppl who use grindr to have as many pointless hookups as they can. does this make the community look good?? grindr really does help foster this idea that gay men are sluts. what’s really so wrong with criticising that?

    b) also not fair to say his career has fallen off since american psycho…how exactly are you judging that? it’s not like AP was a success when it came out. everyone hated it. it took time for it to do well. all of his books are so polarising that I’m not really sure you can claim any of them are a high or a low point. & if you think that celebrity or attention seeking was ever the point then i get the feeling that you haven’t actually read anything he’s written…..

  18. Since Paris Hilton has a new cd coming out, I find this stunt an obvious attempt to get some free publicity.

  19. I read American Psycho. To his discredit, I thought the movie was better. In fact, I think Mary Harron pulled off what he was trying to do way more successfully. What was the other question?
