Brendan Maclean: “Stupid”

Now that we’re a healthy week’s distance from Valentine’s Day, it seems like the perfect time to put down the cans of frosting at 2AM and attempt to transfer focus to a less physically detrimental form of therapy. Namely, musical.

Remember last year, when Australian musician Gotye crashed through the regular politburo of mind numbing, generic pop music dominating the mainstream with his achingly sad “Somebody That I Used To Know”?  Well, as Aaron the Moor says in Titus Andronicus, “Let not thy sorrow die though I am dead”, because here comes the next great break up song, again, from Australia.

(Perhaps Australians have something to teach us about what it means to be alone and disappointed…)

Get ready to fall in love with adorable, quirky, hipster-cute, out, gay Australian singer Brendan Maclean whose new single “Stupid” is featured on the forthcoming soundtrack to Baz Lurhman’s The Great Gatsby. He’s got some super enviable moves going on here, and it’s a little reminiscent of Lily Allen in its sparse, cutesy aggression (which we love).  He also looks like a way hotter, younger version of Noah Taylor (who we also loved – in the late 80s).  Yes, there’s another Australian artifact you just learned about.

  1. I’m still torn on whether the song holds up without the music video, but gosh, it’s some of the best dancing since Robyn’s “Call Your Girlfriend”.

  2. I’ve found myself with it on repeat in the background, smiling every time I switch tabs to it accidentally, so I think the song holds up amazingly. “We’ll adopt / we’ll have dogs,” is a brilliant line, haha.
