Aural Only: Rihanna & Britney

If you’re the type of person who cares about headline-grabbing pop star collaborations, you’re going to wonder why it’s taken us “so long” to write about this. To be perfectly honest, we listened to Britney Spears and Rihanna‘s new version of “S&M” several times yesterday, and we fail to understand why everyone’s jizzing their manties over it.

Yes, it’s Britney, bitch! We get it. For some reason, gay men are expected to flip out every time she does, well, anything. Even so, while we’re sincerely digging a few cuts on her latest album Femme Fatale, she sounds a bit odd and out of place on this remix. It’s one of those “seemed like a good idea” situations, where the end result isn’t nearly as amazing as the original concept. Thrown together for the sake of hype value.

(Note: We’d be much more excited to hear this duet.)

We realize some of you are going to violently disagree with this sentiment. Before you storm Manhunt headquarters with pitchforks, torches and sparkly dildos, please take into consideration that we’re not speaking for the whole office. A couple of folks here loved this track and will probably bitch us out for not sacrificing our man-taints in the name of Godney and Princess RiRi.

On top of that, even if we loathed this (which we don’t) that wouldn’t stop us from including it on this Saturday’s Weekly Top Ten. In other words? If you’re the type of person who cringes when they see the name “Britney Spears”, you better learn to fucking deal with it. She’s officially back. But for real this time.

  1. Barf..Make Brit go away..she doesn’t seam to be enjoying her stage preformances..I guess that is what happens when you have no control over your life at 30..maybe Re should bitch slap her out of it…God knows she has been…speaking of has been.. back to Brit..take sum time off..step away from the computer mic..plzzzzzzzzzzz

  2. “She’s officially back. But for real this time.”

She’s never been gone. Ever. Even during her most difficult times she was still there making great pop music like “And then we kiss”.

This track is pretty fun. Maybe it’s still the “same old” s&m, but it’s just the idea of britney & rihanna collaborating that makes everyone so excited. I really hope they’ll make a proper collab and record a new song together.

  3. I kind of like it. Britney’s voice is really weird though, I admit, but overall, it’s a nice result.

  4. a mediocre remix of a mediocre song rendered even more mediocre by Britney’s contribution.

gay math: mediocre cubed = sucks

  5. As a long time Britney fan, I must say that with all this promo for the new album all it’s voice tweaking and her walking around the stage and scripted answers that aren’t even any good (My boyfriend and I like to work out, we work out a lot. Really, that’s ALL that you do?), I’m on the edge of the Britney bridge and nearly jumping off. A few fun tracks on the new album, but mostly the same throughout and it could be anyone singing it.

THIS mix could be the last straw. What a load of shit. And the tweeter banter back and forth? The publicist’s assistants that actually did the tweeting really should be fired for being so lame. Britney, gangsta? No, no and no.

I’m with you DeWitt, I don’t understand either.

  6. In Britney’s defense and i am not a fan, she sounds here like herself and not like that shit of over the top robotic production she does in Femme Fatale. It looks like this is Rihanna’s tenth #1 on Billboard tying now with Janet Jackson.

  7. I actually love Brit’s vocals on it. I think the remix was rushed and they didn’t have time to over-process them, which is a good thing. It’s not her type of song, but she sounds good on it, weird, different, but definitely good.

@T I think they had a genuine banter on tweeter. Not everyone needs a tweeting assistant, it’s not that hard to type a few lines a day from your mobile.

Talking about tweeter, Kylie Minogue is a total tweet-spammer, she just doesn’t stop tweeting. I started following her after she said she was in love with some tracks from Femme Fatale, but I quickly had to unfollow her.

  8. wow, i have to say i love this track! i loved S&M already but while i agree Britney does sound different here she sounds really good!
+ her verse is OMG “if i’m bad tie me down! shut me up, gag & bound……me!” i’m really glad they did this collab & hope they get together for a video 😀

  9. I was about to say the same thing. It sounds like she has a sinus infection.

I like both of them, and I like the original song, but this remix doesn’t really work at all for me. It’s kinda like a peanut butter and pickle sandwich- two good things that shouldn’t mix.

  10. 1 point for the ‘it’s britney bitch’ line.
2 points for admitting that people like it.
    10 points for ‘Godney’
10 points for telling people to fucking deal

Now on to the song…I like it, like it. I do see where the comments of her sounding out of place or weird in this. It could be because this was a very rushed project and the producers and singers didn’t have enough time to master it. Or maybe RnB’s singing voices and styles don’t really mesh well.

I think Britney sounds exactly like how anyone would’ve expected her to sound, the vocals are distinctly Britney and the style in also very Britney. I loved the new verses added in; very VERY naughty. Now all it’s missing is a video and I’ll be in heaven.

  11. Brit’s vocals are terrible… it sounds like she has a blocked nose. If you listen to where she sings “sex in the air” and “sticks and stones”, theres no proper N sound, it just sounds like “sex i di air” and “sticks ad stones”. I don’t know if thats the result of it being heavily autotuned or not but it’s terrible. She sounds like a child here and is nowhere edgy enough to be singing this song…
And don’t hate on me, because I LOVE Britney and quite a few tracks on femme fatale… but this remix is just Shitney.

  12. @stb – I could not agree with you more.

I love the new beat and vibe to this song. It is faster, darker, and dare I say dingier. But Britney’s voice on it is just computer generated garbage. She almost sounds like a mouse. You can really notice the difference between Rihanna – someone who actually has pipes and sings for real, compare to auto-tune Britney. I know I am going to be attacked on here, but oh well, that is how I feel and my opinion.

Great new beat and music. Great for Rihanna’s publicity, not so great for Britney. When she should be trying to make something out of TTWE, now attention is gonna be placed on S&M. I feel like her people are desperate. 1st you have her first single which soared and then dwindled off the charts. Second, you have her next single that went nowhere (it has been going higher but it will never be a top 3 song). Third, you have a #1 album but with 1/2 the sales of Circus and less sales than Blackout, which has already been replaced by Adele on this week’s chart losing 60% of sales. Fourth, you have her horrible live performances which even her dearest fans have laughed at. Fifth, you have an awesome concept video with TTWE, but then she can’t even dance or move in it, which takes away from the awesomeness of the concept. Finally, you have this tour that she obviosly cannot sell out on her own. She needed Enrique who dropped out. Then it was Usher who said no. Now it is Nicki Minaj and Jessie J. I mean Lady Gaga, Pink, Rihanna, Stevie Nicks, BEP, and dare I say Kesha have been selling out arena after arena totally as the only billed act. Why can’t Britney?

  13. I hate doing this, but I’ll reply to Chris:

    1. Most people agree that Britney’s vocals sound raw and non-computarised on this remix, cos the song was rushed, but you claim otherwise.

    2. Her first single had great success and sold over a million copies already. It was quickly replaces by her next single though.

    3. Her next single is on the rise and hitting top 10 again this week. Just wait till billboard releases the new charts.

    4. Her album sold that much for a reason. Circus was a comeback album, released during christmas rush period. Femme Fatale wasn’t a comeback and released during slow sales period, in addition to being leaked in full 3 weeks prior to release.

    5. Her performances weren’t great, ok. But not that terrible.

    6. TTWE is a great video with nice dancing. A new dance version of the song is going to be released this week.

    7. Who told you she can’t sell out her tour on her own? She did with circus. Imagination… imagination.

    8. Enrique dropped out cos of his ego. Usher would never join her, cos he is managed by a rival tour promoter. Now it’s Nicky Minaj, who is not a superstar or anything. And there’s no Jessie J, get your facts straight.

    9. Rihanna had to cancel a lot of tour dates, cos there was practically no demand. Dare to mention, neither Rihanna nor Lady Gaga had a no.1 album yet.

    10. Everyone has an opening act. Why spill your poison all over the place just cos Britney wanted an uprising rapper for her opening act? It’s not like Brit’s fans will buy tickets just cos Nicky opens for her…

The only thing i agree with u on is that now the attention will be on S&M remix and TTWE will fall down the charts again. Other than that, you are just a typical hater.

  14. @nex – what you are saying is that you are retarded if you hate Britney? You are retarded if you don’t like what she does?

Are you kidding me? Who gives you the right to call anyone retarded? I teach special education and i take HUGE offence to that awful slander of yours.

People have their own opinions. You need to allow them to have that. Just cuz they are not ur views does not make them retarded.

I think you should apologize and rephrase ur comment.

  15. @Nex – get ur facts right. I quote from billboard.com:

fter several days of rumors and being ” in talks,” Nicki Minaj was officially confirmed as the special guest on Britney Spears upcoming Femme Fatale tour today, via a post on Spears’ official website. The tour begins on June 16 in Sacramento, Calif., and is scheduled to wrap on August 13 in Toronto.

The tour’s all-female lineup will also include Jessie J and the Toy Boys and Nervo on every tour stop.

So why does she need all this support? The others than I mentioned had opening acts, but not of this calibre. Minaj is a HUGE star right now with a #1 album. She may have selled out Circus, but it is obvious her record company does not have faith in her selling out this concert.

  16. Jessie J won’t be opening for Britney. That was a mistake in the Billboard article. I sensed this tour won’t be as successful for her due to the number of opening acts with her/ Maybe they are doing it to distract attention from Britney as the main act. I hope is not gonna be like the Circus tour which I attended and it’s by far the worst concert I ever saw with all the lyp-synch and her being carried away by her dancers from side to side of the stage. Even the Pussycat Dolls did a better job entertaining the crowd back then, but I guess everyone bought tickets just to show support for Britney because like it or not, we love to see artists fail and have them make a comeback.

  17. @Chris, I called you retarded cos of the mindless crap you wrote. I made 10 clear points to justify it. It’s not cos you are a hater. Imagination… once again.

And, no, once again, Jessie J is not opening for Britney. Get your facts straight’er.

And it’s not like tickets went on sale and there was no demand and then Britney announced a guest star. Circus sold out left and right why would her record company not have faith in her? Like I said, having Nicky as an opening act won’t motivate any fans to buy tickets.

So, stop being dumb. I’ll use dumb instead of retarded from now on, if that makes u happier.

  18. @JPH the tour will be very successful. Just wait till the end of april, when it goes on sale and they’ll start adding additional dates here and there.

Circus tour was pretty bad, I agree. I saw it in London. The whole round stage concept was horrible in the first place and lip-syncing is definitely unacceptable for a solo concert. Nonetheless, it’s astonishing how powerful the britney machine is if her fans would buy tickets to see her lip-sync.

  19. She can’t dance; she can’t move; she can’t sing; she can’t sell out tours without other top name acts; nuff said really. I mean you people on here complained about Katy Perry’s “paperbag” lyric. Have you heard some of the lyrics on femme fatale? Talk about cheesy!

  20. Dumb, retarded, stupid, lame, foolish, etc., are all harsh words to use when commenting on someone’s opinion.

Everyone is entitled to what he or she thinks and should not be attacked, especially over pop music. You can either agree or disagree without getting nasty.

I am indifferent to Britney. I like some songs and I dislike others. Personally, I think this new album is on the fun side, but not by any means ground breaking or record shattering. You can dance to it, yet it is over produced with really bad lyrics. That being said, I do like some tracks on it, while others were immediately deleted.

It is not rocket science to tell that this album is not what her record company hoped it would be. Yes it debuted a #1 and yes it had a #1 song, but in the record business today it is all about longevity on the charts and continual sales. I just don’t think this album or her has what it takes to stay on the charts for as long as albums like The E.N.D. or The Fame. I am not a hater. I hope she does well, I just don’t think the way her album, singles, videos, and tv promos have been handled is the best way.

Speaking of touring, it is a proven fact that tours have suffered over the last couple of years. However acts like The Black Eyed Peas, U2, Bon Jovi, Pink, Lady Gaga have been selling out over and over again. An artist of Britney’s calibre should be selling out on her own as well, but let’s face it, she won’t be able to. A record company when they are afraid an artist will not sell tickets or singles will always try and bill someone else (Kanye on ET – total waste, but skyrocketed to #1 for 2 weeks). It is always better to add on supporting acts then it is to cancel shows.

So in Britney’s case, they are going to add on as many acts as they can, so they don’t have to cancel any of the shows. Publicity speaking, it looks alot better that way. The fact is that in the past, Britney was at least able to dance and put on an awe inspiring performace, so people looked past her inability to sing live. Now that she has shown on more than one occasion that she can no longer dance or be entertaining, people are more cautious about her lip synching. They don’t want to pay $ for lousy dancing and a digital recording. So the record company adds on numerous acts to boost the appeal. In 2010/2011 Nicki Minaj is one of the best selling artists with 5 songs in the top 40. I am sure she will add appeal to this tour.

  21. not necessary. what is necessary is a good show with shit blowing up and lights flickering. the more and the quicker, the better

  22. Anyone who thinks her vocals aren’t autotuned in this needs to read up on autotune and what it really is… in its purest form, all it does is correct and perfect vocals, not do that “t-pain” effect. You can hear the autotune on Britney’s vocal so easily because it was obviously rushed and not tidied up… listen hard at the end of her lines and you’ll hear that almost tinny noise, that’s autotune.

  23. @Chris, I love how you avoided all my arguments and returned to your retardation.

@Ryan, you seem as dumb as chris if you think that i called him that for his opinion. Read it again.

@Ryan, answer me this, why would her company be afraid that the tour won’t sell, when her previous tour became the 5th most successful tour by a female artist ever by the time it’s finished. I think what they are trying to do is to stir it up a little, to spice it up, to make it different from her last tour. Both of your arguments are dumb. Come on, Jessie and the Toys? Nervo? Hell ye, I’m totally buying a ticket to see those unknown acts. Logic.

  24. Britney’s voice is weird because it’s overproduced.

I’m a bit younger right, and I missed the whole Britney fan fare. As a result, I think it’s a lot easier to see how her talent has faded. Conversely, she’s the master of generating buzz and maintaining an exceedingly overwhelming fan base.

  25. Did i mention that I like Rihanna’s solo version much more than the remix?

I just don’t like when people start trashing Britney for no good reasons.

There are around 5 regular Britney haters on this website who never miss a chance to leave some mindless hate comment about her every time they get a chance.

  26. Finally number 1 on iTunes!
Rihanna will be collecting her 10th Billboard number 1 next week!
    The powah of Britney!
    Eat it haters!
    hohohoho!

  27. Oh yeah has been, #1 album and #1 single 13 years after debut? Only artist under 30 with 6 #1 albums?

If you don’t enjoy her music dont buy her album, don’t enjoy her performance don’t buy her concert tickets.

As a consumer you have a choice, so complaining is stupid.

  28. @nex – you yourself even mentioned that the Circus album and as a result tour was a comeback album. Of course the ticket sales are going to be big for a comeback tour. Like you said this is not a comeback album, hence not a comeback tour. The album sold less than 1/2 what Circus sold. This week it dropped by 75% and not to a big new album, but to Adele who has been on the charts for weeks. Of course this tour is not going to see as much as her Circus tour, and of course Nicki Minaj will have influence. I don’t think any of my comments are dumb, they are based on numbers and sales.

And Katy Perry is still #1 with digital sales for a 3rd week in a row, with the official charts being released tomorrow. S&M has been the airplay gainer for 2 weeks now, and that is all Rihanna’s doing – no help from Spears. If S&M gets to #1 on the hot 100 next week, it will mostly be because of Rihanna. The power of Britney has nothing to do with the success of S&M so far, so you cannot make a blanket statement saying that Rihanna is going to be #1 thanks to Britney.

  29. Nex:

You seem to have a weird obsession over Britney like she is your best friend or something. I think you really need to get over it. It is totally weird and unhealthy. I have never seen anyone get as upset as you do on here when their fave artist is bashed.

I seem to recall you ripping Born This Way a new hole every time it was mentioned on here. You bashed Gaga and the song everytime you wrote about it.

You can’t have your cake and eat it too.

  30. @Ryan still there was no indication that the there was no demand for Britney’s tour, even though it’s not a comeback tour. Like I said, her last tour ended up being a top 5 most successful tour by a female artist, i’m sure they have enough confidence for next one. Also, Ciara was opening for Brit in London, and I think Ciara is much bigger than Nicki. Nicki hasn’t had a top ten hit yet, Ciara had a number 1 single and 2 more which peaked at number 2, in addition to several top 5 albums including a number one. But i’m very sure, 99.99% of people went to see britney, not ciara. Do u get my point? It’s just cool to have an opening act. Besides if someone is desperate to see Nicki, they can always buy a ticket to Lil Wayne’s concert and i’m sure they’ll enjoy it more, cos they are both from the same genre. I don’t wanna return to this argument. If you don’t get it, i’m sorry for u.

@Ryan, S&M did great on airplay, but it was lacking sales. Before the remix was released it was only at number 5 on itunes. Now the remix is at number 1. Katy Perry was number 1 on sales, but her airplay wasn’t near Rihanna’s, still she managed to hold Hot 100 number 1 thx to superior sales. Katy’s airplay was also growing, but now with Britney’s help Rihanna will get number 1 on digital in addition to her powerful airplay grip. That will propel her to number 1 overall. And since the sales went from number 5 to number 1 after Britney joined the track, yes, I can most certainly claim that it would be Britney who helped Rihanna get another number 1. To recap: ET – number 1 on sales, Top Ten airplay and growing fast, obviously cementing the number 1 lead on Hot 100. S&M: Number 1 airplay, Top 10 sales, but falling, and airplay alone wouldn’t save it cos Katy was growing very fast. Now sales are up + already strong airplay = we’ll see result next week. Main sales contribution and therefore major overall contribution: Britney. This is not a blanket statement anymore. Hope the numbers speak to u now.

@Nathan I’m generally ‘obsessed’ about music among lots of other ‘obsessions’ that I have. It just happens that Britney is being discusses here more often than anything else and a lot of people like throwing random shit at her. It’s no trouble at all to defend her. So don’t try to make me look like a weird Britney fan. I’m all about justice. If you read all my comments on this page, then you’ll see that i’m some blind fan who glorifies everything Britney. To prove my point: I called circus tour bad, and I said that I prefer Rihanna’s solo version more. I just don’t like when people like Chris make dumb claims based on nothing.

@Nathan regarding lady gaga, yes, i keep bashing born this way any chance i get, cos it’s a vulgar rip-off of Madonna’s express yourself and she hasn’t admitted it yet. and i’m not the only one, this controversy been all over the web minutes after the song was released, but that’s an old story. if judas will be another rip-off, it would be tragic.

  31. i don’t particularly like this version either it sounded odd right from the getco. better luck next time i guess

  32. No, Britney isn’t back. She doesn’t sing her music, and she doesn’t even try to dance. “Oo, I can twirl around and sit down. That’s dancing!”

  33. somebody should have told britney to blow her nose before running her vocals through auto-tune!

  34. Britney is a big disapointment this time around. besides the horrible autotune voice, she doesn’t want to dance now!! so what exactly are you doing then??
