Aural Only: Natalia Kills

You know when you first hear a song and you’re not particularly impressed? Perhaps the lyrics are a bit too “eighth grade poetry” for your tastes, or the overall sound is a bit too familiar (and not in the good way). Whatever the case, it’s just not registering in your brain. So you write it off and move on with your life…

Then, all of a sudden, you’re in the middle of some bourgie-ass grocery store, trying to decide between two organic whatchamacallits and this infectious melody starts playing in your head. Crap! Where have you heard this before? It haunts you on your journey from one aisle to the next, until you get to the checkout line and shout in the cashier’s face—“NATALIA KILLS!

Okay, maybe that’s not exactly how it goes down, but it comes pretty close to our experience with the singer’s latest single “Wonderland”. Though the music video’s dark fairytale vibe managed to catch our attention, it took a while for the song to grow on us. Now, we’re going to walk around the office secretly singing it to ourselves, hoping that nobody notices our subtle desk-chair dance moves…

Was anyone able to catch her performance at the White Party in Palm Springs this weekend? Or see her live on some other occasion? We’re curious to know about her onstage presence, and whether she can really live up to all this “next big thing” hype.

  1. The “take me to wonderland” chorus is a pure genius hook — its probably what got to DeWitt at the grocery store. Unfortunately, the rest of the song is not very good…. and the video is just plain awful.

  2. saw her open for Robyn a few months back and she actually sang live! it was a fairly stripped down set. just her and two dancers. she’s a tiny little thing but seeing her live made me check out more of her music

  3. I also saw her when she opened for Robyn in Portland, OR. I definitely agree with Shameless. She sang live and performed, which is good to see for a change… but definitely prefer Robyn

  4. WTF WAS WITH THAT VIDEO!!!??? Freaky and sick!

So so song too. Strange because I loved her other stuff that’s been posted on here, especially that first one about a mirror or something.

  5. Saw her on the same Robyn tour, she should not have been the first of two opening acts. She was much better that the middle act, Diamond Rings. Her voice is great live, but she only had 15 minutes on stage.
