Aural Only: Marina & The Diamonds

Marina and the Diamonds, Hollywood, new single, The Family Jewels, commentary, commercialism, celebrity culture, poppier, voice, song, singer, Welsh, pop

Marina and the Diamonds won't be releasing their debut album until February 15th, and I'm determined to make you fall in love with Marina Diamandis before then. She may look like another pretty-faced pop singer, but just wait until you hear the voice that comes out of her. It's so odd, yet so delightful.

According to Marina, her upcoming album The Family Jewels "is a body of work largely inspired by the seduction of commercialism, modern social values, family and female sexuality." The first single "Mowgli's Road" was released a while back, and it's highly recommended for fans of Florence + The Machine or Kate Bush

Diamandis has followed up that outstanding offering with "Hollywood", a song which showcases the poppier side of her sound. Don't be too deceived by the sunny sound! This one's doused with a hint of cynicism, a biting commentary on our obsession with celebrity culture. Are you loving this as much as I am?

  1. still loving Obsessions tbh… I’m a big fan of Marina, but I think she may be a little too quirky for the general public. unfortunately!
