Aural Only: Jessie J

Aren’t there enough recent pop songs about penis envy? First, Ciara wished she could act “Like A Boy”, and then Beyonce did the whole “If I Were A Boy” thing. At what point does it transcend beyond empowerment to being totally played out? Well, the world may never know, because up-and-coming singer Jessie J is on the rise with “Do It Like A Dude”.

All opinions aside, Jessie’s story is certainly an interesting one. She suffered from a stroke as a teenager and continues to have heart problems to this day. Driven by her illness, she gained a songwriting contract with Sony, cowrote Miley Cyrus‘ hit single “Party In The USA” and has been hailed by Justin Timberlake as “the best singer in the world right now”.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Recently, it was announced that Jessie will be the recipient of the Critics’ Choice Award at the 2011 Brit Awards. Previous acts who have been bestowed with this honor include Ellie Goulding, Adele and Florence + The Machine. Obviously, she’s in terrible company. Not that we’re being sarcastic or anything.

While we’re not thoroughly impressed by “Do It Like A Dude”, we’re looking forward to hearing what this girl has to offer. Her upcoming single “Price Tag” has guilty pleasure written all over it, and rumor has it that she wrote Britney Spears‘ soon-to-be hit “Hold It Against Me”. More importantly, she makes wacky faces like Nicki Minaj! And we can tolerate any music that incorporates wacky faces.

  1. Kind of hot, catchy, danceable, infectious. Freaky video. Not sure what I think about the black spiked lips, but overall, I like it.

  2. She is an utter twat. I don’t really buy the whole health thing, either. She did a show in London recently and was a complete diva throughout so much of it. And she blamed her demands on her illness, except the demands she made could, in no way, have anything to do with what she says is wrong. Boring and full of herself already. Next.

  3. Do it like a dude, is a good song. However, not the best of the bunch she has to offer. I believe she has potential to become a big star in both sides of the Atlantic since she’s already known as a songwriter. If Florence and Adele benefited from that BRIT award, why not Jessie. After all, she’s getting recognition.

  4. Listened to this a few more times and had to have it! Went to iTunes and paid up my 99 cents. This track smokes!

  5. It took me 4 times to finally like it. It’s catchy. She has a bit of a P!nk vibe with that in your face attitude. Hope to hear more from her in the new year.

  6. Jimmy T, I glad you worte you went to Itunes to get it. All I was thinking towards then end of the song was.. “I wonder if I can get this on Itunes yet…”

  7. I totally dig this song. At first I thought she was a rapper, but she seems different from some other girls in the biz. Hard to believe with that look she’s worked with Miley and Britney. I’m sure she’ll be big in 2011, hey if it worked to Ellie Goulding and Adele’s advantage, why not for Jessie J. Can’t wait to see her this weekend on countdown.

  8. i saw the song on telly a few times and only after i started singing it while out i realized that i kinda like it and it’s catchy.

  9. holy shit. I love her. I really love the song Do it like a dude but Topher thank you SOOOO much for that video….SHE’S STUNNING! Guess I found a new obsession. She’s gorgeous and when she hit her elbow I laugh and enjoyed her more.
