Aural Only: Jason DeRulo

There are two trends I absolutely loathe in music. The first is auto-tune, something I apparently have in common with Jay-Z. It's particularly annoying when people who don't need it (glaring at you Mariah Carey and Mary J. Blige) indulge in these unnecessary vocals alterations. My other problem lies in sampling songs that are less than five years old. Though Mr. Carter wrote a song against my first grievance, he was guilty of my second on the M.I.A.-sampling track "Swagga Like Us". After all, nobody's perfect…

Though it will likely appear on our next Song of Summer post, I'm not too happy about Jason DeRulo's "Whatcha Say". The song samples Imogen Heap's "Hide and Seek", throws on a heavy helping of auto-tune and it's pretty much destined to be a big hit. Excuse me a moment while I go cry in a corner over the current state of the music industry.

  1. I don’t mind sampling in general, as it tends to make tracks you love a little more danceable… But ‘Hide And Seek’ is virtually her magnum opus, and doesn’t need to be danceble at all. It’s beautiful and haunting, and should only have her attached to it (and maybe Tiesto, who did a great remix which stayed true to the original)
