Aural Only: Court Yard Hounds

Court Yard Hounds, Ain't No Son, Emily Robison, Martie Maguire, Dixie Chicks, country music, gay youth, abandonment, powerful topics, coming out

OMG, Lindsay Lohan has a new song out? Fuck that. We'd rather be listening to the Court Yard Hounds, a country duo composed of Dixie Chicks members Martie Maguire and Emily Robison. The sisters' self-titled debut will be released on May 4th, and they've been getting a considerable amount of love from the gay media for their tune "Ain't No Son".

And they deserve it! The lyrics weave a tale of a young gay man who comes out of the closet, only to be rejected by his family. "I turned the TV on, and it was A&E or one of those documentary kind of shows about these poor teenage kids who are devastated that their parents won't let 'em stay in the house because they found out they were gay," Robinson explains. "The lines, 'You ain't no son to me/Eight pound baby boy I bounced on my knee' were around from the very beginning. That idea, how can you have kids and love them so much and one day decide not to — it just boggled my mind."

I've always had a soft spot for the Dixie Chicks, but this makes me love them even more! It took courage for Martie and Emily to confront a topic that isn't really discussed within the country world, and I applaud them for doing so. Is anyone else loving this as much as I am?

  1. Nex, Court Yard Hounds is just a side project for the two sisters. Dixie Chicks are just not recording at the moment, but haven’t broken up.

  2. I have had this song for a few weeks, and I can’t stop listening to it. It is so powerful lyrically. I do wish the mix had the vocals in the front a bit more, but that does not stop the message from getting through. I was sceptical when I found out Natalie was not going to be on this record, but I do not miss her on the songs I have heard. I LOVE this song, and I just hope that radio will not ignore it.

  3. Amazing! I love this song and love them more than ever for having the courage to write this song knowing the homophobic audience that they sometimes play too..Def a huge step for equality.

  4. I have to say I strongly dislike most country music but I love me some Dixie Chicks and this song is good. It’s just damn good. These women aren’t just making music to get money. They’re honest to god musicians.

  5. I was terrified when I heard the Chicks were splitting, but finding out it was just for this side project makes me genuinely feel better about life in general…the song. Just another great one on their list. I like. Me gusta, all that jazz. >w<
