Aural Only: Britney Spears

We really can’t win when it comes to Britney Spears‘ new single “Hold It Against Me”. If we say we love it, the uber-masculine Nazis will call us flaming queens and condemn us to homosexual hell. If we say we hate it, the overly obsessive “Godney” brigade will break into our homes at night and bleach all of our clothing.

Well, guess what? We fucking love it, and we don’t care what either side has to say about it! The beat is obnoxiously dirty and gritty, almost as if it’s the aural equivalent of hardcore anal sex. To put it lightly? Britney Spears is using her music to aggressively pound you from behind with a strap-on. She’s not even paying attention to your butthole, because she’s too busy watching a television set in front of you. It’s playing Crossroads. And you’re cumming buckets full of Cheetos. End scene.

  1. I’m so in loooooooooove with this song. It was about time for Britney to change the music scene. Can’t wait to hear it on the dancefloor and dirty dance it 😉

PS: Dewitt, you should try getting the original one, that one is speed it a little bit, it stills sounds great though.

  2. Sorry, I absolute can’t say I love it…!
It’s almost like a Bellamy Brothers remake with the sound of Womanizer…
I don’t say it’s crap, but it’s not as incredible as YOU describe it..
I think it’s about time she finds something else to do, or perhaps come up with something new, not another remake of one of her previous hits..

  3. Personally, I was very underwhelmed. I actually enjoyed the demo track that leaked much more than the final product.

  4. Nor a big britney fan. But this song it really something, the beats are really powerful and filled with depth, the background music Is very routchy with big bass too and very Dance like soundtrack

The lyrics are quite strong and bold and the song is smug show that.

This song is the new britney, a bold move that will do good for the future for Britneu spears

    Hold It Aganist Me: 7/10

  5. Boring… not a lead single. and I’m not a Britney hater, it’s just nowhere near the catchiness melodic tunes like Toxic or I’m a Slave For You

  6. Boring… not a lead single. and I’m not a Britney hater, it’s just nowhere near the catchiness melodic tunes like Toxic or I’m a Slave For You

  7. When people here say “bold move”, is that because they are from outside europe..?
Cause I don’t think that many people here in Europe think this track is a NEW and BOLD move for any artist..
I’m not sure, but I guess it has even been produced in Europe. According to the “sound”..

  8. Honestly as long as Lady GaGa is around she is going to have to come way harder to get the gays/fans in general back on her side. Just saying Lady GaGa is ruling the Charts as far as im concerned.

  9. Well, Britney better enjoy her moment because in a month Gaga debuts her new single so it will be hard for Ms. Spears to hold onto #1. This new single is just OK.

  10. She had me singing the chorus the second time around. I really like it. Can’t wait for a new Britney record!

  11. I loved blackout. It was her best cd. from beginning to end. circus was made to please critics and fans just sucked up. I want more “slave for you” “get naked” “kill the lights”. overproduced dance beats with her voice. Its not much to ask for.

  12. Meh. Could take it or leave it. I am a big fan of Toxic. Liked If You Seek Amy with the word play as well. This is a little generic.

  13. I heard this last night on the radio, and I had the reaction I expected to. I did give it a chance to surprise me- but it didn’t. It’s completely overproduced and autotuned, but again, that didn’t surprise me. The beat was a little too fast, the lyrics were cheesy as hell (“If I said I wanted your body, would you hold it against me?” WTF?) Ms. Spears’ music has never been about artistry and talent, it’s always been about being manufactured and presented in an attractive package.

  14. Sounds just like “Shattered Glass” which is also produced by Dr Luke…I’m bored and miss Lady Gaga already. Hope her new album comes out soon cause this shit sucks.

  15. You Gaga minions are out of control. The worst thing about Gaga are her fans, she is not the alpha and omega. Seems like no one can do anything with out Gaga’s minions tearing it down.

  16. Yeah, speak for yourself. In my opinion she’s never lost the gays. At the circus tour I’d say 40% of her audience were men.

  17. I’m sorry but this song is the shit! A new sound and direction for Britney, and to be fair she has never followed the crowd. A euro dance jam with a lil bit of dubstep thrown in at the middle eight its pure wickedness!!! As for the Gaga comparisons people need to remember ms. Britney bitch has been going for 10 years!

  18. This is NOT a good song.

It is not worth the hype or attention.

It doesnt even sound like her, although does anyone really know what her real voice sounds like? I mean, lets face it – all of her music is computer produced! That being said, I have been a fan of alot of her songs. “Slave” and the entire “Blackout” CD were amazing.

This song is mediocre at best. And what is with that weird shit in the middle? It totally loses whatever momentum it did have.

  19. People are never please but Im sure the gay community in general are pretty much loving it, not necessarily manhunt daily visitors 😛

The good thing about hMiss Spears is that she continues to make people talk about her after 12 years of been in the music business.

Ler’s see if the new talents are able to have the same or at least close career logevity.

Don’t hold it against her 😉

  20. I like it. Now maybe Kesha and a few others can disappear. Also, I like Gaga as much as the next fella but are the “better than Britney” arguments what’s about to happen on here? lol.

  21. I keep having to listen to this song to remember what it even sounds like. It’s utterly forgettable. That dub-beat break in the bridge is the worst. It completely derails the entire song. I think we all *want* to like this song a lot more than we actually do. Just because it’s Britney doesn’t mean it’s automatically great :-/

  22. TOPH & RYAN – I 100% agree. You could not have said it better.

    Not very original.
    VERY forgettable
+ the mid part is f’n horrible!!!!!!!

  23. Please tell me what single Gaga has on the charts right now that’s “ruling” them? Britney went #1 in 12 hours. Calm yourself down with Gagaloo. When her single drops next month, you can have your moment.

  24. Amazing!?! Im cant wait for her album.

I have a feeling gaga and brit will be on top this year….I CANT WAIT

  25. its not BAD. but it’s certainly not a lead single, as someone else said earlier. the chorus is terrible.
i think this is the genre/sound that she needs to stick with (she’s on track) – just this particular song is shite.

  26. Gaga who? come on, the song is awesome, that fugly gaga wont be able to do something against this amazing hit, and you know why? because Ladygaga fan base= tacky! just a bunch of 16 year old queers that don’t even have a credit card to buy a song on itunes.

  27. the lyrics were a little dull… but the dance track behind it… not to mention the bit of dub-step… that made the song for me. Its always great when a pop princess graduates into a dance queen. ’bout time for Britz.

  28. People who only follow pop music are bottom feeders and it clearly shows in the comments: especially this one above mine. Using a generalization such as ’16 year old queer’ for people who listen to certain artist…narrow minded, superficial, and juvenile.

What is this? High school? Grow up and learn to respect the opinions of others.

Who cares who is ‘better’ than the other. Both artists have shown their capability as performers and musicians in the past.

Honestly, the fans are the worst part about any type of popular music. I’m just glad that my repertoire extends beyond pedantic pop culture or I’d go insane.

  29. This is probably the worst first Britney single ever, the chorus is weak and there is no climax. After the end of every chorus I feel as though something is about to happen, and it doesn’t. I like the dubstep part, but really I don’t care for the rest of it.

I’m really just done with Britney, Blackout was good because she wasn’t even involved in its productions, those songs are all about the producers. I haven’t actually felt Britney’s presence on an album since… Britney. The VMA performance was telling, she didn’t know the words or dance to her own song. She got boo’ed off multiple stages on her last tour.

She couldn’t ever sing, she can’t dance anymore and she’s pretty only in photos. What is her use??

  30. YESSS i love both britney and gaga but i love how britney incorporated DUB STEP into it!! ahhhhhh it’s sooo nasty!! i love it!!!!!

  31. Hold it against me shatters all previous records for the most number of spins for a first or one-day at both Mediabase and BDS, according to one of the radio industry’s top analysts Kevin McCabe, founding principal of Musicrunch.
AND is #1 Itunes in 17 countries in 24 hs.

    #justsaying

    Brit, bitchees!!!

  32. Love me, hate me say what you want about me
…but all of the boys and all of the girls are begging to if u seek Amy ^^

  33. Awesome beat, it’s dubstep-lite, emphasis on the “L-I-T-E”. The song is pretty catchy, she’s got me! It’s not very different as some suggest, but I’m pretty excited to hear what Rusko’s got in store for her!

I just wish people wouldn’t comment on “talent” when it comes to mainstream pop. Talent isn’t needed to be successful – you just gotta be smart. You gotta have money and know who’s good to work with and who is not, and how to get publicity. Britney’s got it down, which is why she is successful, along with Ke$ha, Katy & others. Only a select few with talent are able to get both mainstream success and get credibility and make year-end lists, eg, Kanye West, and that’s all I can honestly think of. Brit’s still trying to maintain her level of success if not surpass it, so if she did anything “goundbreaking” or completely “different” from the usual scene, she would alienate not her fans, but a major mainstream audience who are used to being exposed to more “safe” routes to pop music, thus she would fail to make a hit song or album.

  34. Oh, and please don’t say Gaga does anything groundbreaking or shockingly different. She’s not doing anything for the pop scene. Britney’s “Blackout” album moved pop music more forward than her “The Fame” only thing is Gaga got the credit because “The Fame” was so incredibly successful. She only dresses different, but does nothing special with music, eg, “Just Dance” and “Poker Face” are mirror songs of each other, and they could’ve been sung just by another other pop star.

    Ya know what I’m sayin’?

  35. I feel you Zane. Britney’s back and pleasing her fans and even better the general audience aswell, which may not seem to be in this website, but that’s ok. It’s good to see some good feedback here too.

  36. Maybe as a pretty blonde to autotune and plug into the next big completely manufactured hit? Of course, anyone could be plugged into this song, it’s just that she has name recognition and I think a lot of people take pity on her because she’s a hot mess most of the time.

  37. Great track!!!!! And slaying the charts too!!!

Love the Dubstep breakdown! Nice way to test out the market now that she is working with other Dubstep producers and artists!

Can;t wait for MARCH! Long Live The Queen (and if you don’t agree, it’s an opinion and I don’t care).

  38. Unless Gaga changes her whole shtick, she’ll be a has-been before you know it. She’s way too overplayed everywhere.
Don’t get me started on Katy effin’ Perry’s annoying voice. I’d rather listen to Christian Rock all day over those two.
    I liked this Britney song.
