Album Review: Head First by Goldfrapp

Goldfrapp-headfirst

Within the first listen or two, Goldfrapp's Head First may sound like your standard '80s inspired electro-pop album. When you consider the number of times musicians have channeled the eighties in recent years, this might leave an impression that they're "behind rather than ahead of the curve". However, the British duo's ability to inject the decade with their own style and intricacies makes this set stand out from the rest of the bunch.

A handful of songs on Head First could easily pass for classic rock with different instrumentation. The epic, theatrical nature of "Alive" is enough to make Elton John or David Bowie proud, and other over-the-top tracks such as "Head First" and "I Wanna Life" follow in its footsteps.

One might assume that the nine songs aren't worth the full price, but keep in mind that you're paying for nearly forty minutes of euphoric, optimistic pop music. There's not a single moment of filler, though a few listeners may potentially be disappointed by the shift of tone on "Hunt" and "Voicething"

If you were charmed by lead single "Rocket", there's no question as to whether you should check out the rest of this album. As they say, that was only the tip of the iceberg. There's much more where that came from!

  1. I love this album. I’ve been following them for years now. I get more excited for Goldfrapp releases than any other artist at this point. I love how everything they do is totally different. Of course, I’m always a little disappointed as nothing has come close to being as good as Felt Mountain was…
