Academy Awards Open Thread

The 81st Academy Awards will air tonight on ABC. The award show will be live cast from the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles at 8:30 p.m. ET. One of the movies I’m hoping gets recognized is Gus Van Sant‘s Milk, the biopic of Harvey Milk with 8 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Sean Penn.

Also enjoyable was The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which leads the pack this year, with 13 nominations. I personally like all the movies nominated, but am really pulling for Milk to get at least one Oscar!

What do you guys think? Let’s treat this as an open thread with your predictions, and reactions as you watch the show. And if you could care less about the Oscars, just feel free to rant!

  1. woo hoo! go Milk! i’m rooting for that movie as well, it was just great! I also really like Slumdog millionare and Doubt (Meryl=amazing!)

  2. Milk performances were amazing (would love to see Sean win it all). Supporting actress for Button was unbelievable. I like all the choices this year as well.

  3. Penelope plays a bisexual in Vickie Cristina Barcelona. She began her career working for gay Spanish director Pedro Almodovar. Gay characters have been in many of her films. Take that Salma Hayak!

  4. Sort of dull so far, it’s a lot of filler for just 4 or 5 interesting awards… at least it’s gettin to the good part…
